Re: black outer door handles?

Could you have them glass beaded then poweder coated? I would think that would last for years. I think sand blasted would be to rough.

Re: black outer door handles?

Chrome is sometimes overrated. I like some but too many times some builders tend to over do it.

The idea of a truck all blacked out is a little much since I like the chrome handles and maybe bumpers, but if a person wants to go all the same color, go for it. Some new cars are that way.

The problem is taking the chrome off the handles. Most mirrors were already painted but I've never seen handles that weren't chrome for our trucks.

Be sure and post pics.

Re: black outer door handles?

I don't think you want to remove the crome if it's good shape. Just rough it up so the paint will stick.

Re: black outer door handles?

I think the black tinted chrome look that Mike did is cool:

and

Re: black outer door handles?

Might want to check out "black chrome" or maybe anodize.
The black chrome I'm referring to can be seen on bikes build by austro-daimler in the late 70's early 80's. It's a real slick look.
I'm trying to figure out how they did it...

I like the direction your going tho...

if your thinking of powder coating outsuide door handles be sure too use the best peices you can find. pitts in the handles will come back an bite ya after powdercoating.

we tryied this on the kids truck (gloss black powder coated door handles and all the emblems on a 67) chrome way looked better after it was all said an done.

Re: black outer door handles?

Black chrome can look pretty cool on the right build- I was thinking about doing some on my Harley. It seems quite a few chrome shops can do it too.

In the meantime, try mocking up what you want with plastidip:

http://www.plastidip.com/home_solutions/Plasti_Dip

It'll be a no-risk trial to see if you like the look. The stuff is crazy-easy to use, inexpensive and comes right off without fuss if you don't like it. I've gotten in at Lowe's and see it at home depot, ACE, walmart, etc.
I don't think it'll last long on door handles- it'll wear off with all the handling, but it will give you a good feel for whether or not you want to go that way.

Google or you-tube it- there is an entire culture around guys using it - they even do entire cars with the stuff.

This is a good site for it- https://www.dipyourcar.com/home.php

Re: black outer door handles?

When I've powder coated chrome I have always sandblasted. Anything less isn't enough,IMO. You want it rough.Don't worry, the powder coat will smooth it right out,but mainly it will "grip" and last...especially on a high wear part like handles. I wanted to order a second set of handles for my '90 Blazer and do them gloss black, but never did (bumpers, too). It was the '70s body style in the '90s,so black had taken over as trim color...about 85%. It was solid red w/black top, too. I did the rallye wheels (no trim rings) and the stainless vent visors and decided to stop there. The minimal chrome (where you're used to seeing it),minimal trim, and choice use of black made for a clean uncluttered look without appearing customized

Re: black outer door handles?

When you powdercoat over chrome, you sandblast it, and do it aggressively. I've powdercoated a bunch of chrome and built my reputation on getting it dead slick. Anything less than a very aggressive sandblast media won't etch it well enough for the powder to stick like it should.

Re: black outer door handles?

i'm doing the same thing to my truck. the biggest problem i've had is the handle itself. my buddy that that does the coating as well as my self are afraid that if the handles aren't taken apart and then coated that the button will wear the coat off the actual handle or be too stiff to operate properly. i already have my bumper and grill done and shaving my mirrors.

Re: black outer door handles?

I had these powdercoated about twenty years ago and I just hit them with an abrasive on a buffing lathe and then engraved them before having them done.

They have held up fine and work as they should, but my Blazer is a summer ride and not a daily driver.
