Tailgate handle relocator question

I would like to relocate my tailgate handle. I have seen Sir Michael's in a finished truck. I called them to ask specifically whether or not it could be used on our stock tailgates. The lady I spoke with said it could not, because the contour of the tailgate didn't jive with the mechanism.

So, I've been noticing the magazine feature trucks that have handle relocators and noting whether or not they have the stock-appearing tailgate. I have seen several, including one in the current (January, 2008) issue of Custom Classic Trucks magazine. But I find no mention of the specifics of that install.

So, anybody know the specific brand of kit that will work with our stock tailgates? I need to know for sure that the kit I buy will work. I want to retain the stock appearance, but do away with the handle.

Anybody?

Thumbs up Re: Tailgate handle relocator question

I purchased one from Mar-k. All I had to do was cut a hole in the backside to locate the new handle, and then patch the hole on the outside. Everything was included with the kit. Even came with easy to read and understand instructions.

Re: Tailgate handle relocator question

Good point OhioDan The main point I bought the skin was to change appearance of the tailgate.

Re: Tailgate handle relocator question

Okay, ECE and Mar-K. Sir Michael's says it had to be skinned.....don't want to do that. It defeats the purpose of my handle relocation. Thanks, folks.

Re: Tailgate handle relocator question

You guys just need to get more creative. If you can find another tailgate to cut up, you can make a panel that matches the contour of the handle hole to patch it

No some companys need the skin to cover the main body of the handle that is cut into the indented space on the gate. ECE's is what I bought and I will be doing an "LFD's How-To" in the next few weeks. Theirs comes with a new handle, rods and the misc parts needed for a Skinless install.

That's what I'm talking about. The blue truck has the appearance I'm after. A good metal man can bend the metal he needs to fill in the hole, without cutting up another tailgate. That is what my body guy will do, when I get the relocator kit. ECE, here I come!!

Don't worry too much about it. The other tailgate was a rusty mess

Re: Tailgate handle relocator question

Information from MAR-K's website:
"Reverse your tailgate latch to the inside of the bed. Kit includes new handle, rods, inner plate, hardware and instructions. This kit must be installed with a tailgate full cover or weld-in for best results."

Re: Tailgate handle relocator question

Here are a couple of pictures of the Mar-K kit installed in my truck with the outside of the gate filled in. As a few folks have mentioned, the kit comes complete with everything except a panel to fill the existing hole... That you will need to fabricate.

Re: Tailgate handle relocator question

Talked to a body man who did a Sir Michael's relocator on his '71 GMC. He put a skin on the tailgate. His is the truck that lead me to call Sir Michael's, where a lady told me I had to use a skin on the tailgate. But the body man said "no". I will give MAR-K a call on Monday. Thanks for the heads-up.
