Question Factory Steel Wheel Colors on K10's and K20's?

All you 'factory steelie' guys,

do you prefer White, Black or what color factory steelies on your 4x4 67-72 trucks?

Let's get some pictures going for ideas please.

Thanks.

It depends. I've run white, black, argent, and color-matched. I like black with chrome lugs,as well as white and color-matched. And,white/argent/color-matched with hub caps. It's real traditional to run wide wheels in black w/no caps. That's what I mostly saw back then. That's where the decent hubcaps come from when you find them. Wide white with caps is a great look for a hybrid stock look.

I must say I'm partial to mine with white but black would look good, too, depending on the color of the truck.

Thats a good look with the red truck, white wheel, chrome cap w/blue. I have that same look right now with a black rim. I like the white better, gotta admit.

So ... is it more trouble and expense to prep and paint steel wheels or to send them to powder coat? Expense?

special-K brings up a good point - I DO quite like black steelies with NO caps. Very "down to business" look. But does depend on the truck, I agree. Dressed up truck with all the trim - I tend to lean toward white with caps - but for a bare bones 4x4 with minimal trim, black (or white) with no caps looks real nice.

Powder coating is much more durable. I spent $300 to do my set of wheels.

Was that 5 wheels ... 60.00 each? Trying to get an idea of what I might expect to pay for powder coat.

Thanks.

Thinking about it ... you know what would be very cool is if we could buy these steel wheels already powder coated / painted White for 60 to 75.00 a piece NEW.

Any thoughts?

Re: Factory Steel Wheel Colors on K10's and K20's?

That about what I paid for the last set I bought...then $65 each for sandblasting and powder coat. Powdercoating is very durable, but I've taken a 4" wire wheel to rims and stripped them bare, primed, and painted (leaving tires mounted) for a fraction of the cost and it lasts a long time.
1st pic: Ford 16" wheels I redid the cheap way last spring.
2nd: Powdercoated 9.75 x 16.5s
3rd: Painted 9.75s w/o caps
4th:Argent paint
5th:'84 w/ black powdercoated 9.75 x 16.5s & long chrome studs

i paid about $60-75 per wheel (5 wheels) for the wheels themselves, then $50 per wheel for pc (very reasonable to pc on the west coast - I paid $110 per wheel in MD when I lived there).

Here's a set of those Ford rims from a van I got off the CL. I like this shade of grey myself and they do fit the Factory dogdishes as well.

Re: Factory Steel Wheel Colors on K10's and K20's?

My 1968 K20 came with black lock ring wheels.
So, since I can't run those anymore I just powder coated steel wheels black to match the OE look.

Re: Factory Steel Wheel Colors on K10's and K20's?

I'm dropping mine off in a few days to have them powdered in white. That sounds easy enough... but he's asking me what color white and how shiny I want them. I'm glad he's asking but I don't know what to tell him. What would be most like OE for a 70 GMC 2wd? I'd love to see some pics with info on what color white and shine you used.

I like them all. White Black, Body color, and of course Argent.

Did I just quote myself? I think I did! I'm going to answer my own question. Having found out that Les Schwab will powder coat the wheels for $25 each, I'm dropping them off tomorrow. The choice of "which white" and "how shiny" is gone. They have one white. Truck White as they call it. Done.

Dang Jocko, who did your wheels in MD? I've used ISPA once, they do naval and a lot of gov't stuff. They did something other than wheels but their pricing was in line with Maryland Industrial Coaters, who I've used since the '80s. When I first went there they changed $25 a wheel and didn't sand bast, I had to do that. They got a huge cabinet and started sandblasting. They are up to $65 a wheel for blasing and coating...$260 a set
