chevy history
i was wondering when seat belts started being put in the c10. my truck does not have any in my truck. my moms always telling me im going to get a seat belt ticket, but i was told if my vehicle didnt come with one from factory, im grandfatherd in. im not sure.

According to the attached Florida DMV link, any vehicle manufactured prior to 1968 is exempt from the seat belt requirement.

Here in Washington a seat belt violation is $101 and it's a primary offense (they can pull you over just for not wearing your belt). Regardless of the law I'd install and use belts. It's an easy way to prevent becoming an organ donor. Per the following website the four major US car companies made front seat belts standard in 1964, and it became federal law in 1968. I know my moms 1964 Buick Skylark came stock with 2 in the front. I was far away in exotic southeast asia during 68-69 so I can't confirm when they became standard equipment in all seating positions. http://www.aa1car.com/library/timeline.htm |

seat belt tickets here in fl are 125.00 my wife just paid one here coupla months ago. got caught in a driver license check.un did her seat belt to get her driver license out of her back pocket.cop seen her do that and told her had to give her a seat belt ticket. kinda a catch 22. sorry to hijack your thread.

My 66 had factory seat belts. I believe that was the first year. Here is one of them...

thank you so much for that information. i own a 64 so i am in luck. and i keep myself very healthy, in case someone does become a new owner of any part of me. i recently got pulled in miami dade county by statetrooper and given a 114 dollar seat belt ticket in my work truck.

US auto manufacturers started putting seatbelts in all vehicles starting in 1963.

...when we built our "66" we got two trucks,one was built in St Loius the other was built in califorina both have belts but the truck that was built in california has the threaded hole in the corner for shoulder strap the other did not..

Seat belt laws are state to state. Florida now has a strong push and checks on belts. My 66 panel had one driver side belt and visor. There are no holes in pass side for belts.I read on this site somewhere 66 was the first year for manditory belts for drivers by law.

maybe in florida, in cali trucks werent mandated to have then till 72/cars were 68. i have yet to see a truck that doent have them, my 56 has them.

funny we are talking about this...my new GF has a 5 year old and with no belts in my truck I kinda run into issues...all my old rods ( 32/34/48....) never came with belts but in order to get Street Rod Plates in NH you had to add them and I would use a booster seat/lap belt so they could see over the dash....I think I'm going to add lap belts and a booster to my truck and take him on some road trips to look and do more MAN Stuff before Mom trys to send him to Ballet class.....
what are you guys doing for you little ones in your trucks?? |

seatbelts became standard equipment on chevrolet trucks beginning in 1966(before that they were optional).also standard for 1966 was backup lamps and two speed windshield wipers.and also in 1968 side marker lamps were added to all cars and trucks.
