installing windshield trim

What should I do? I have a 72 Chevy shortbed C10, I want to put in the SS Trim in the windshield that I already had install with the correct seal. Can it be done or do I have to start over? If so, should I get a new gasket, the one I had install about 6 months ago(Truck Shop) doesn't seem to fit well or tight. If I need a new gasket, what kind should I go for to get a better fit? Any information on this?

Re: installing windshield trim

You have to install the trim in the rubber seal before installing the windshield. Two types of trim depending on if you have trim with the deep flange or shallow, smaller flange, you need the same trim rubber to match.

Re: installing windshield trim

From my experience with the trim on these windows, drop the trim and run for the hills!

They are a major pain to install and my glass guy when I owned my body shop hated doing them. He worked on one for 4 hours, threw everything down and said, "Don't call me on this truck again..." (And he was one of the best glass guys I have ever worked with) So I had to call another glass shop and the girl on the phone said, "Yeah, we basically have to send two guys out and a donkey to get those in..."

It CAN be done, but maybe you fill find a glass guy who has learned a trick or two installing them.

I just installed the windshield and rear window on the '71 with SS trim and didn't have any problems. They installed just as easy as the non trim ones I have done... I think a lot of the problems with them is that people use the wrong gasket for the trim they have. Like Sammy said, there are two different SS trims and you have to know which one you have so you can get the right gasket. The short one has a 3/8ths inch lip that inserts into the gasket and the long one is 5/8ths inch. I never install windshields with less than three people, two on the outside and one on the inside. Any less and you are asking for trouble...

Just my 2¢ on the subject.

Red face Re: installing windshield trim

Would it be off subject to ask how to remove the windshield trim without ruining it? If so I will start a new thread. I have 2 parts suburbans Im scrapping and want the trim before they get hauled off. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: installing windshield trim

I just take a utility knife, cut the trim from the inside, remove the winshield, then remove the trim from the rubber with it all out of the truck.

Re: installing windshield trim

I installed my 71 with trim and did it with my daughter, daughter's boyfriend and I. I had no trouble with it. I put both in front and back. I had the seal and layed it outside the day before to get it good and hot to work with it. I used the rope trick and had 2 windsheild tools for the top corners.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

That being said, I was only installing the stuff that my customers bought and was given to me to install. Also the two times I have had to install them the parts came from LMC... not bagging on them, but maybe thier stuff was not made correctly.

Lesson learned... I will watch for that next time and maybe I won't need the donkey!

Jeff,

I use the "Precision" brand seals and I get my parts from Art's Classic Truck Parts in Indianola, IA because I can go there and pick them up. Oh, and he is a great guy and has 4 really nice trucks too...
