1970 K-10 Dash Removal

Does anyone know if the windshield has to be removed in order to pull the dash on a 1970 K-10 pickup? I found the four bolts that allow the front of the dash to come loose, but can't figure out how to get the back to come loose.

are u talking about the dash pad? if so no theres screws in front with speed nuts under the dash.
if talking about the whole metal dash than yes its spot welded under the windsheld

travlinman, thank you for your response. It does help even if it wasn't the answer I was hoping for. I was referring to the metal portion of the dash. I was hoping to be able to remove the metal portion to make upholstering it a little easier. If it is spot welded, that might be more work than I'm willing to go through to get it out. I may just stick with my original plan and upholster it in place. Would have been nice to have it out of the truck, that is for sure!

I don't have any pictures handy but what some folks do is take off the dash pad and cut the dash under there. Unbolt the bolts you saw. Get a replacement. Cut the replacement in the same spot. Bolt. Weld. New dash pad and done.

That's what I did. I am replacing it because I have a stock radio to put back in. The previous owner hacked the radio area really bad. Here's a few pics. Once I put it back in place, I have a brand new black dash pad.

But......To answer your original question, I have only heard of the top dash portion being removed after the windshield is removed due to those spot welds. Hope this helps.

Thanks to all for your responses and help. I'm going go attempt to leave it in the cab and upholster it in place. I will just have to take my time with it. I will post some pics when I get it done.

so you are going to upholster the actual dash? i don't know if i've ever seen that done... paint, yes, fabric/leather no..

Yes, it needs to come out. The front lip of the dash will break the glass when you lift out the dash.

Yes, I am going to upholster the dash. I have not seen it done either. I think it will come out very nice and make the cab feel a little more comfortable. It does lose the feel of an old pickup, but my objective is comfort with the cab. I have seen many painted and they look great. I want to try to upholster it and see how it feels. I will post pics when I get it finished.
