Need help with front lowering spring ride

Ok everyone, I need some help. I have a 1990 Suburban and have been tossing back and forth to lower it. Here is why I can't make up mind. October 2012, I was hit by a drunk driver in my wife's lifted Grand Cherokee. I ended up having another back surgery. I have a total of five disc's fused now. Pretty much in pain all the time. The factory ride on my suburban is great and I really don't want to mess with it. Heck, it rides much better than my wife's Subaru. Every day I look at it and it needs to be lowered. I can't bag it, most of my funds go to my youngest sons sports & my oldest sons project. This is what I'm thinking. Drop the rear 4 inches, the front with a 2.5 drop spindles (keeping 15" factory steel wheels) and 1" lowering coil spring.

What type of front lowering coil spring gives the best ride? Also, is there a difference between 80-87 suburbans and 88-91? It a pain in the ass when looking stuff up for a 90. I just want the stance lower and keep my nice ride.

Please give your opinions which you think would be the best or your opinion for a better set up than what I'm thinking.

The best way to approach aftermarket springs is to find out the spring rate of the original and shop by that number, that way you don't buy a surprise. Ride quality is subjective but the spring rate will guide you to a good decision for you.

I was hoping I wouldn't have to go that route. I was hoping to get opinions from everyone what they liked and how the ride was. I'll start my journey of searching google for a spring rate.

Re: Need help with front lowering spring ride

I've got the Summit Racing house brand springs up front, and I forget the rate. They showed up labeled Ground Force. They ride fine to me, nothing stiff at all about the ride. Most any truck lowering springs should have ride similar to OEM because most guys buy them for aesthetics and not to improve handling. As long as the front spring rate doesn't exceed around 425 lbs/in you probably won't notice the difference.

Re: Need help with front lowering spring ride

I have used Mcgaughys 2" drop springs on several trucks and a 90 Suburban. They ride as good if not better then the factory in my opinion.

Re: Need help with front lowering spring ride

Spindles don't affect the ride of the truck. You can also flip the axle which should not affect the ride either since your not changing the rate of the springs. You are just changing the location of the axle to the top of the springs. Just make sure that if you do flip the axle that there is enough room for the axle to move. Build the notch to the most it will ever need.

When my truck was static dropped with bell tech springs, dropped spindles, flipped axle and blocks it rode awesome till I hit a hard bump and then because I didn't have enough notch it slammed hard onto the frame in the rear.
