Stuck Throttle / carb rebuild options

I dont really drive the truck.. Just start it weekly and drive it around the parking lot.

Yesterday i let it warm up a little and while driving stomped the throttle. Probably only 3/4 throttle.

I let off the gas and it didnt feel like it was slowing down. Fortunately the brakes are stronger than the throttle and i was able to slow it down. It seemed to be idling at 2000rpm or so. I put it in neutral and kicked it a few times to see if the fast idle was sticking or something. It still didnt throttle down so I turned the key off (expecting a massive bang that didnt happen)

Today I went out to get the numbers of the carb and started it up. No problems. Fast idle seemed normal and it kicked off when I tapped the gas.

So what caused the sticking yesterday?
I played with the throttle cable and spring and they seem ok and not bound up.

second is carb options. I wasnt to rebuild it myself but really cant have the truck not running for days because my office complex HOA are nazis about non running vehicles.

So I was thinking of just getting a reman from guarenteedcarbs.com for less than $200.

Then I started thinking about a holley or edelbrock instead. But I plan on swapping to a big block in the next few years and am not sure the carb can be used on a BB?

On this SBC 350 if I get a 600 or 750cfm am I going to bog out the little 350, or will I be underfeeding the BBC when it comes? Can I just swap the carb onto a new engine?

Current carb: 17059203 2278 CBB
I think its a quadrajet with no california emmisions, built in 1978 for a 1979 chevy with a manual trans.

Re: Stuck Throttle / carb rebuild options

Did the pedal feel normal when you 'kicked it a couple times' to try to get it to idle down?

Re: Stuck Throttle / carb rebuild options

yup. didnt feel like anything was stuck. Just seemed to be idling at double speed or something. It wasnt WOT or anything or the brakes may not have held it but i didnt have to throw it in neutral in an emergency or anything. Just it definately wasnt right.

I've been doing some research on carbs and thecarbshop.com is just up the road from me and supposedly mike is the quadrajet master. He wants 300ish to rebuild it.
I can get one with a lifetime warranty from guarenteedcarbs.com for 178.99. I do like using someone local but im not sure its worth an extra 120.

Re: Stuck Throttle / carb rebuild options

If rest of the system is working I would try spraying the sides of the carb & down the throats. The fast idle could be sticking or the secondary throttles. The secondarys dont get used much & gum up. The next time you open them they can stick. If the throttle cable has not been replaced in a long time I would replace it. The cable core digs in to the plastic caseing when it is on a curve & can put a groove in it & hang up.

Re: Stuck Throttle / carb rebuild options

does this look right?

things i notice:
Isnt there supposed to be a kickdown cable attached to the same mount as the throttle cable?

Looks like an aftermarket throttle cable mount? The one in the back with the square hole has no cable in it.

The front of the carb looks like it overhangs the mounting plate. Or it has a big gasket. Simething just looks weird about it. You can see the mounting holes sticking out. Is that normal?

I just noticed it's an Edelbrock Performer intake.

Re: Stuck Throttle / carb rebuild options

Throttle return spring? Maybe a little weak? If you put a shorter and/ or stronger one on it? 3-4 bucks.. fixed
