Well I decided last week I had had enough with the rear main leaking. I dropped it off last Thursday for them to fix it. Rear main, timing gear cover, and intake gaskets all were to be replaced. I hope they finish it this week!
That's pretty good for the milage I guess and it was the first and last engine I have ever built!
Before anyone say's it. I just don't have a lift is the only reason I let them do it. Working off jack stands ant fun when your over 50. If I had a lift it would be in the air and I would have done it myself!

For everything he told me less than $500.00 he is buying the parts and everything! The main is a 2 piece so he doesn't have to remove the transmission.

Andy, if you had your engine on a stand, you wouldn't have to crawl under it and work..

Gotta do the same to mine before it goes back into the '69. No time like right now.

Yea it would be a easy task if it were out but that want happen for awhile I hope! I have been babying it now for a year with a little leakage but in the last few month's it has been a lot so I decided to go ahead and have it done.

I just turned 43, I want a lift too LOL. Ofcourse a garage with a concrete floor would be a wonderful start. I'm still tight enough though I just can't bring myself to pay anybody else to do anything for me

250 grand on these old motors is pretty decent to have lasted this long. Must have been well taken care of to last that long.

The motor itself is a 1986 Camaro 305 TPI I built it back in 1987 and it's been my daily driver ever since I bought it. I drove it everyday until I got my 07-08 Tahoe. Now it gets a breather every now and then. I would do it myself to if I had the lift. Working off the concrete floor isn't what I call fun.

Picked up the truck today! Man I was so excited. $165.00 to fix the leaks and change the oil and filter!
He replaced the rear main & oil pan gasket. The intake was good he said. I have driven about 60 miles since I picked it up this afternoon and not one drop on the floor so far.
Now I have to get a nice day next week and take it to the local car wash and spray it off underneath. That's going to be fun! Any suggestions...I have a small pump sprayer and the car ramps. Wet suit may come in handy to!

There is a great difference between working on a truck to improve it and having to work on it because it has issues. I love to build trucks, customs an hot rods but hate to repair vehicles even though I did it daily for a living for a number of years.

And at 64 I can well relate to the concept that it isn't fun anymore to have to roll under a truck and pull the oil pan and replace the rear main seal. Come to think of it, that was never fun even when the money for doing it was good.

I guess it boils down to having the right tools for the job. Having the truck in the air is the only way to do something under it. If I had that then I would have done it myself. Putting it on stands and having your face right in the middle of something isn't what I call fun anymore. I'm glad he fixed it. he said the rear had a small chunk missing.

Mine is in the air, it's on jack stands and there's more than a small chunk missing.....

Sounds like a good deal to me.

And on the cleaning I'd ramp it and spray some purple power or another degreaser on it the night before if you can leave it outside over gravel or something. Then bring the ramps and spray again before you power wash it. I'd use the powerwash with the high speed soap to start and then move to just water....

My 27 year old son is an animal about us redoing this truck. I think he's trying to make up for some time lost when he was in the USAF.

He bought a sandblast cabinet from Harbor Freight on Thursday, and built a rolling stand for it, today. He put a shelf on the bottom to mount his vacuum, used some industrial hose to plumb it for air, and added a quick connect on the outside of the cabinet for the compressor to hook to. He added a light to the inside of the cabinet, so we'll be able to see what we're doing. Gonna clean the control arms, then hit 'em with some 70-mesh aluminum oxide to prep 'em for paint. I thought about soda, but got the ALO2, instead. Crazy thing: I spent 27 years at ALCOA, making all kinds of alumina-based products that went into everything from toothpaste, to the white rubber on whitewall tires, high temp ceramics and abrasives. I carried the stuff home in my nose and pockets and wore out several pairs of jeans, and now I have to buy it!

Pressure washed it some today and plan to do it again tomorrow to get all the oil and grime off of it. Purple power did good with the car wash sprayer!

OK,
I think the rear main is good but I keep having oil on the 2 starter bolts! Everything is dry except right above the starter on the back of the block. But yet the starter is dry except for the two bolts. Should the bolts have sealer on the threads when installed? Just trying to figure out how it's getting down there without being on the rest of the starter.

Mine did the same thing when i took the starter out. im pretty sure it was coming from either a valve cover or the exhaust coil thing i dont know whats its called a Duhicky i guess. or a whachamacallit.

Valve covers are dry around the back corner. I don't think they are the problem.

It's dry in the picture.

Wipe it off and keep driving it, if it's leaking somewhere eventually it will become more obvious where it's coming from. But my guess is it's residual oil that's in places the power washer can't get to, and will eventually stop when there's no more left to leak.

If it has that many miles and doesn't have any blow-by.......I'd be amazed. But, the fact that an internal combustion engine is an air pump means that the air within the crankcase is going to force the oil within the crankcase to be expelled. It's either burned or leaked.

It sucks not being able to hear! LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB! After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

But my guess is it's residual oil that's in places the power washer can't get to, and will eventually stop when there's no more left to leak. Posted via Mobile Device

But, the fact that an internal combustion engine is an air pump means that the air within the crankcase is going to force the oil within the crankcase to be expelled.
