327 alt. bracket question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have a 327 and it didn't come with an alternator from the previous owner. There is no holes in either head so it can't mount there. But on my water pump on the passenger side the top mounting stud for it, has another nut. Is this where my bracket mounts to? That's just my guess. Any help would be appreciated.

That's interesting. No holes in the heads mean you have to find some creative way of mounting all the accessaries to the engine. Looks like a serpintine system is in your future. Yes the extra nut was for the top bracket but it's not going to do u any good without the heads being taped.

They mounted off the left exhaust manifold on that one. Someone must have a photo of a stock 327 in a 67/68 that had the alternator mounted in the stock location.

Here's good news... you have "camel hump" heads which are really good old school power makers (same as me) you also have a short water pump.

You just need 283 or 327 brackets, you don't need to get creative

Here's a pic of mine, the bottom bracket will also bolt into your exhaust manifold (if you have the correct one) or you can get a bracket if you're running headers. I do not have the correct manifolds so I will make an L bracket from the front manifold bolt to the rear of the alt bracket.

Yep just like Desertcat says,I have the exact setup but running headers and there is a bracket for this setup.

Thanks guys. I plan on running headers so I would need this different bracket. Do any of you have part numbers for the brackets?

It's kind of a poor picture, but this is a '68 327:

Wierd thing is, someone changed out the head, so it's tapped, but never used the holes. They kept the stock alt mount.

Recommend you click the Subscribe tab on the page header and become a member... then you can place ads in the parts forums of this site. Believe me you will recoup the money you spend on the subscription in no time.

Then do a WTB ad for 283-327 brackets. Or just wait until something comes up or try to find it locally.

I will see if I can find a pic of the header bracket....

Mine is the same way. Several companies make the correct brackets. I believe Mr Gasket makes some cheapo chrome ones,

My ongoing truck projects: 48 Chev 3100 that will run a 292 Six. 71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant. 77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.
