Re: 68 4x4s

I think that`s cool.I know that the springs and mounts are different from`68-back.It would have a Rockwell 221 transfer case from factory and the front axle design went through`69.The parts are a bit tougher to find. But not, considering alot of guys swap the newer stuff in.I see people giving away the take-offs that were still working. If I wanted to,in a year I could have a mountain of these axles, tranfer cases, straight 6s,3spds,and lower gear rears for nearly nothing if I wanted. The stuff`s not junk, just less desireable.

Re: 68 4x4s

what did they do to the doors? if you look at both doors towards the roof it looks like it was cut at one point maybe to be chopped, but decided not to?

i say go for it if its something you want. me personally dont like 4x4s

Re: 68 4x4s

Looks like a decent project from the pics. Like Special-K said, the 68 will be a little different than the newer trucks, but that's what makes them interesting, why be like everyone else?!!

that is a good question about the doors i will have to find out what the deal is
im also not a huge fan of the 4x4s but i think i might have to make an exception for this cause i cant really pass up trading a 63 dodge big blocked 4 door that i got for basicly nothing for this truck

is there a reason that they are less desireable? or is it just because there ot to common?

Looks like they made truck doors from Suburban doors by swapping the back of the window frame & installing truck windows.

The Rockwell is a fine transfer case but parts are getting hard to come by. It is a fairly loud transfer case but that never bothered me. They don't take kindly to getting low on gear oil. They have a low rear output which is good if you have alot of lift on a truck.

The closed knuckle front axle has a terrible turning radius compared to an open knuckle axle and I'm not sure they can even be changed to disks.

Re: 68 4x4s

i think the tranfer case on these truck is a gear driven case. very reliable and strong but NOISY. that might be the drawbackas to why people swap. that and availability of parts.

i bet that is exactly what they did to the doors

what is the chrome peice of trim on the door ledge? is that something that came stock on a suburban maybe or is it just something that someone added?

Re: 68 4x4s

I never noticed all this door stuff.Yeah, that`s Suburban trim on the doors.I`m surprised they didn`t just change the frame, the way they were built.

It`s not a matter of the earlier stuff being less desireable, but a matter of the newer stuff being more plentiful.

Re: 68 4x4s

is there a perticular 4 speed that usualy came in the 4x4 4 speed trucks?
is the tranny more then likely a granny gear tranny?
what are some rear axle ratios that it might have? and whats the driveability of the posible rear ratios?
thanks

Re: 68 4x4s

Yes,it would be a granny 4spd.4.10 would be the tallest gear you`ll find.I drive them all the time.I have a`72 GMC with the 3.54s/automatic/33" tires and had`72 a Chevy with 4.10/4spd/35" tires.I never noticed a significant difference in driveability and I`d alternate driving them daily. The GMC has a 350 and the Chevy has a 400 SBC.They both get 12.5 mpg.I prefered driving the 4spd truck. It seemed the 4spd allowed me to use the torque to drive the truck and control fuel consumption.

are the granny trannys from 4x4's the same as the one in 2 wheel drive trucks? would a munchie rockcrusher be able to bolt right in?

Re: 68 4x4s

i am know the owner of the 68, not shure when i am going to get it but i cant wait, on another note i just ordered all the parts to finish rebuilding my 350 i should have the truck running within a week of getting it here, it has a clear title and it comes with a spare 4 speed and a fresh rebuilt transfer case
it will be about a 500 mile round trip to go get the truck but its worth it

Ah, no.........a 4x4 transmission has a different output shaft so that it mates to the transfer case.
Double no on the car transmission. You wouldn't like that 2.20 first gear, even if you could make it fit. It is just not enough for that big heavy truck unless you had really low gears, then the highway would be a screaming nighmare.

I have a 68 short bed K-10. I took out the closed knuckle front end to add disk brakes and power steering. Mine has 3.73 gears from the factory. Mine has the original 327 and rockwell TC still.

Re: 68 4x4s

Hey,I want to correct what I said about gear ratios,For some reason I was thinking K/20s (3/4t).Those gears could be 3.73 and possibly(doubt it) 3.08s.No rockcrushers in these 4wds,as said by Longhair. The granny tranny is a bouldercrusher anyway. If it was a 3spd with a Dana30 case Advance Adaptors makes a kit to swap a rockcrusher. It`s for Jeeps.I considered this swap tears ago and AA couldn`t tell me if it could work in my`71 Blazer,so I went TH350/NP205 t-case.The first on an M20-22 would be lower than a 3spd trans. But,I still think it`s a bit off for a fullsize truck.

Re: 68 4x4s

I think the 68 had the SM420 which is more desirable for 4x4's cuz of the lower gearing, the SM465 which is in the later years, my blazer for example, is still a good transmission as well. I personally love 4x4's and don't want to own anything other than one. If I came across anything 2 wheel drive i'd sell it and buy a 4x4, but that's just me. 68's look great as far as i'm concerned as well.

I'd trade that old dodge in a heart beat for it and drop a regular old 350 in the 68 and drive the piss out of it. Also swap in a 71 or newer dana 44 in the front to have disc brakes and open knuckles for a better turning radius and you'd be set.

would a later 70's front axle from a 4x4 bolt right in??
getting rid of that dodge was the only reason i ever got it in the first place
plans for the truck so far are to drop in a 74 350 that im freshening up, im gonna give it a red/black plaid seat, with otherwise black intirior, the truck is gonna be painted black, its getting a set of 70's-80's truck rallies with basicly brand new remington off road tires that came off of my dads 71 custom deluxe/10 4x4 but only till i get a set of old skool slots with a red acent

Axle would be a bolt in procedure and your plan sounds perfect, exactly what I would do. Make sure your gear ratio matches the rear also and just an FYI you should be able to find those axles everywhere for cheap.
