Any ideas on removing a fill plug?

Well,now that the motor is in the truck I'm going over everything tightening down bolts that came loose or were never tightened.I'm also topping off the diffs with fluid..I got the front plug out pretty easy with the crescent wrench but the back dont wanna come off.Why can't they just use a regular bolt?They have to use those damn square plugs....Any ideas?I tried the big crescent wrench and it's too big but the little one doesnt seem to do the job.I found a metric wrench that fit on there and I think I bent the wrench before the plug budged...It's the fill plug on the side of the diff case near the pinion on the 12 bolt rear...

It's a square hole right? Or a square nut? I just used the ratchet extension to fit in mine. (the square hole)

I use air tools for everything just weld up a square box out of like 3/8 steel to fit then weld a big nut on the end then you have a ready made adapter for ither air or a big braker bar.

As a last ditch effort, you could try just a little heat from a torch. Works wonders some times. Not too much though, dont want to cook anything inside.

Hit it briefly (and carefully) with a torch, then beeswax - or WD-40 if you don't have any beeswax

spray it with some hairspray and then rub some ice cream on it.

Don't use chocolate ice cream. Use strawberry and eat all the chocolate get a good sugar high going then spray with hairspray and jerk away.

Ended up getting a socket on it and used a breaker bar and finally it came loose.Many many bottles of oil later the differential is full

Glad it finally came off. They do take alot of fluid don't they! A couple years ago I bought a 5 gallon bucket of gear lube, that sure has been handy to have as I've worked on the K20 and K5. Sure beats working with a bottle too, I just stick the hand pump in the bucket and wear my arm out pumping.

Yeah,it took quite a bit.Thankfully the plug isnt higher! I coulnt really get to it with the shock there so I had to get a funnel that bends (made of plastic) to use to fill it up.I dont know exactly how much it took but it was more than the front.The best part is I dont see any leaks under it

does the rear fill the axle tubes as well as the center? glad to see that you ate your Wheaties and got it off. Mine came off easily, even had the red tag warning about limited slip on it...

I believe it fills up just the center. I went out and seen a tiny puddle under the rear axle but a bolt on the cover was loose.I tightened it so that problem should be solved now.

Was it run very long that low on lube? If so, might want to pull the cover and check for wear?!

When I installed the lift I took the axles apart to where it was just a housing,installed all new bearings,seals,etc.Set the axles up properly.The front wasnt like the back though.It needed a new ring and pinion.Anyway so I just have had some light coats of oil on it from when I assembled everything.The truck hasnt left the garage so it didnt rust.I just up till this week never filled them up.Now that the truck is close to running,it was time to fill them up.
