Steering Arm Removal
Just curious if there's a trick to easily get the taper locks and steering arm off? The nuts came off without a problem, but I can't get it to budge. I'm sure it's all just rusted together and I need to get a bigger hammer, but figured I'd ask. THANKS!

On my 74' 3/4ton 4x4 a buddy was helping me with a Rancho kit at his friends auto shop. I was shocked when it came time to "pop" the stearing arm off. He grabbed a short handle sledge and went at it for about 30 seconds. Keep in mind he's a certified master tech with 15 years under the hood. He said there are three cone washers that you have to break loose.

I was having problems removing one once too. My neighbor walked over, grabbed a short handled sledge, gave it a good solid smack down (as in, puting it onto the cone washers) and then it came right off. I had been trying to pry & smack it up for hours.
He said the same thing, ya gotta break the cone washers loose.

i tryed using a hammer for about an hour and said .... it and got out the portabaan and started to cut away from the arm around the cone washers. once i could get a punch on them i drove them out and whats left of the old arm just fell off.

generally one good strong wack will do the trick.. dont be afraid to give it hell.

Victory Is Mine!
Just a quick thanks for the help on the steering arm. Just needed some motivation that it could actually be done. The short-handle sledge was definitely the key to victory. Too bad I was shipped the wrong replacement steering arm, oh well, will give me some work to do next weekend. Thanks again!
