Powder coating rims..pricing

I am currently looking into getting my steel rims powder coated, I tried find new ones online but not very much luck, I priced a local vender for powder coating my originals. The price includes striping the old rims, powder coating the faces (outside only) of the rims in black then adding a clear coat for $80.00 a rim. Should I continue searching for new black 16 inch 8 lug rims or buck up the $320.00 for the powder coating? I thought of doing a spray can job but not sure how they would look...Thanks for any input

Re: Powder coating rims..pricing

That seems high to me.

A couple years ago I paid $50 per rim AND dogdish cap. That included sandblast and p/c front and backside. Did the spare too. No clear though.

Re: Powder coating rims..pricing

I paid $50 a wheel complete blast and powder front and back a few years ago when I was stationed in SoCal. I was talked out of a gloss black into a satin/semigloss to reduce the cost as there is less prep required when it isn't going to be a high gloss surface. Also, I wouldn't think that a powder coat should need a clear coat, that may be adding to the cost.

If that's the lowest price you can get, I would try spray painting them first, worst thing that happens is waste of $20 worth of paint and taking them to the powdercoater.

Re: Powder coating rims..pricing

A local chain tire store (Les Schwab) around here does black or white for $25 a wheel. Colors are $35. Blast and powdercoat. I realize were on the Left coast here but just to give you an idea.

Re: Powder coating rims..pricing

To others it may seem high, but $80 is about normal for a quality job in our part of the country. If you want something that's durable and trouble-free then powdercoating is the way to go.
I paid $85 a wheel here in Connecticut. They did a great job and they look as good now as they did 3 years ago.

EDIT: I just re-read your post and wondering why they would only do the outside face of the rim. If they're charging $80 and not doing the whole thing then, yes, I agree that that's high. Price around for a place that's lower and will do the whole job.

Re: Powder coating rims..pricing

That is extremely high for my area. All powder coaters have a minimum charge for one color. Here it's about $70. I would guess I could get 4 wheels blasted and powder coated for the min at most $100 ALL FOUR.

Re: Powder coating rims..pricing

Powdering the outside face only is hack. I'd run from that shop.

I charge 80 per wheel for single stage. That's the entire wheel not just the face. Powdercoat is just like paint work, you get what you pay for. If you shop for the lowest price you're likely to get the lowest quality.

Re: Powder coating rims..pricing

Really glad I asked you guys for your input, I live in a rural area and the shop I priced is close to home. The closest other shop is 75 miles but after calling sounds worth the drive. They will clean up the old rims, put on a first stage of primer then do the black and of course that is for the whole rim for min charge of $50.00 and a Max of $75.00 depending on how much needs to be cleaned up. Sounds much better to me

For the low cost of the systems and anyone can buy a used kitchen oven for $50.00 why not do it yourself and save a few bucks ? do a few pieces for your buddies to pay for everything and get all your coating for free ?

Re: Powder coating rims..pricing

I was quoted $450 to blast and powdercoat 4 15x8 ralleys.

Needless to say, I declined.

Same guy coated my 18s in clear for $50 each a few months ago.

Re: Powder coating rims..pricing

Check out Dexstar wheels. They're actually trailer wheels, but identical to the OEM steelies. For about $65, not too shabby. You can get them in Silver, black, or white.

Rickson Wheel has OEM Accuride wheels. You'll have to look under Ford F250 or E250 though. They're only $75 each, but they're brand new.

Well I don't mind posting that either I got ripped off (big time) based on what you guys are posting, or prices in the Baltimore/D.C. area are crazy high compared to everywhere else.

I paid $125 per wheel. That included start-to-finish work, not coating an already-prepped wheel. They stripped the old paint, rust, etc. and matched the factory body color for me.

Before and after:

Not at all. I'd have been at 120 per wheel for that job. You took him a set of cruddy wheels that required heavy blasting, then he put a two stage powdercoat job on them. That's a color base coat, then cured, then a clear topcoat and a second cure cycle. That's not quick, easy, or cheap to do a job like that.

Who did you use. We always used east coast powder coating up in cecil county. They do really good work and stand behind it. I have literally had to beat on their work with a 5 lb hammer and didn't hurt a thing.

Re: Powder coating rims..pricing

I used alloy wheel repair specialists. I think they're a franchise location. I called a few body shops about getting my wheels blasted and painted. The first two body shops I called said they farm out wheels, and they both referred me to these guys. They're off of Rt. 40 (Pulaski Hwy.) near Rosedale.

Those wheels are exceptionally tough to coat. You paid a very fair price.

the trailer wheels are a good price, but say the stud size is 1/2". can you sue them with 7/16" studs?

Re: Powder coating rims..pricing

I got a set of wheels done at Les Schwab for 25.00 a piece but they powder coated over the rust and pitting. Great for a driver truck but not great for a show truck. You get what you pay for and I would rather pay the 50 a wheel that the true powder coater charges, I will never use them again.

Update.. They company I was going to use dropped the ball and never returned my call to arrange a time for me to drop off the rims, So I called the company closer to my home to speak to him further about his process, After speaking with him he lowered his price to 75.00 a rim (was 80). he would do the WHOLE rim, Sand blasted, Powder coating then clear coat, I should get the rims back by 02/06/14, He also threw in a few small pieces I had for the tail/reverse light brackets for 20 bucks, I will post pics of the competed job when I get them back

Re: Powder coating rims..pricing

Shop around a little. No rule that you need to use the same shop for media blast AND coating.
I found 1 shop cheaper for stripping the wheel and another shop gave me a better price for coating

2 different shops...Total $75.00 per wheel. That’s for a “stock” color. When you want custom colors the price will go up.

Re: Powder coating rims..pricing

Got my rims back today.. $75 bucks for full rim and a clear coat that he said would make the rims "pop".. Happy with the work but not sure about the clear coat he put on .. Has a hell of a shine but maybe I should have gone with a more flat black or semi-gloss.
I also was going to go with chrome lug nuts but found these black one for about half price I think they will match up nicely. If they scratch or look weird when mounted I will just get the chrome ones, I also found aluminum black valve stems that keep the black thing going
