Axel problems?
Has anyone had this problem? Pulled the diff to rebuild but it but I noticed this on the drivers side carrier. Some wear on the housing about 2mm groove worn
Into the housing. I had though there would be a shim but no shim. Passenger side looks perfectly fine. Is this fixable or junk now ? |

I have not seen this problem in the dozens of differentials that I have worked on. While it is possible to repair it, the cost of the necessary machining would probably exceed the cost of another housing.

What does the old bearing look like? That may be due to previous damage but it doesn't help the housing any.

My guess would be if there was no shim, this diff was not set up properly somewhere back down the line. Shims do two things, set backlash and side bearing preload. In all my years, I have never pulled a rear end down that was O.E. that didn't have shims in both sides. If one was missing, the carrier was probably walking slightly in the housing and also spinning the bearing race, which results in the groove you mentioned. You might be able to set it up correctly and postpone the eventual need to replace the damaged housing. Just my two cents worth. Rear axles are expensive and need to be set up right for longevity.

There were no shims on either side of the carrier. The passenger side seemed perfectly fine, as shown in this photo. There was some pitting on the drivers side bearing but only on two bearings. Pinion was perfect no slop no pitting. Ring gear had some pitting on the back side of the teeth but not the drive side. I thought maybe it had some water in it at one time. But I've had the truck for 12 years and never had to any seals or anything. Never had any clunking or whining or hums. Always seemed fine. I haven't driven it much only a few trips that were 600+ miles when I moved but it was a quiet champ then. I was really surprised that there were no shims.

I've learned not to ever say never definitively, so I'll qualify my statement by saying of all the semi-floating rear ends I've pulled down, I've yet to see one without any shims in place. That said, not really sure how you got one without any on either side. Seems it would be almost impossible to set up the ring and pinion without any at all. If it's been run that way for a while, you can count on a horrendous gear noise if you set it up properly due to the fact that the gears have the established wear pattern based on the way it has been up until now. Would love to know how this turns out. Will stay tuned in for further updates.

Cant really see because of the reflection it's acting like a mirror on the drive side of the ring, reflecting the pits from the back side.
