check it out... our trucks at work

I was picking up a truck at a customer's shop (Penske) and was kinda shocked to see this. There's only a small handfull of the light duty trucks around here still used professionally for work here. And to be honest, this is the first one I've seen in 20 years set up like this.

Re: check it out... our trucks at work

Pretty cool. Just goes to show that a tool will outlast it's original owner if taken care of. That reminds me of one I came across 6-8 years back. I am an electrician and was setting some field pole lights on a soccer field near Austin. I called a crane service that my company had done business with in the past. At first they said they were tied up for over two weeks before they could get to me. When I told them that my lift was only around 750 lbs, 60 ft., but the truck could driv up close, the lady said "Oh, we can send out our little truck. We don't use it much any more, but the owner likes to keep it around." I asked, but she did not know what kind of truck it was. Later on, the owner called me back and asked if I was ready to lift that afternoon! During the conversation, i mentioned that I was going to have to arrange a man lift to aim everything after the lights were set. He said "No need, I have a basket that I can bring to lift you up." So I said sure and asked what kind of truck it was. He said it was a 1970 C60 with a 427. COOL! The only disappointment was I did not have my camera, and the phone I had at the time did not have a camera. (I always carry one now!) He came out and did the lift, and as an added bonus I did not have to rent a man lift. We got all eight poles set right at dark and started aiming the lights. He was there around 6 hrs and when my boss got the bill, he could not believe that it only cost $450. He used several crane companies and they were typically twice this much or more. The crane truck owner said that since the C60 had a round pipe telescopic boom ( works like the factory antenna on our trucks), it was really limited on lifting anything too heavy and too far out from the truck, but if he could pull the truck up close to the lift, it still worked great. He had bought 2 bigger trucks (Peterbilts) with modern type stacked booms that could lift more, higher, and further out, but still like running his old Chevy that he started the business with. He competes with big companies that have big Manitowoc motor cranes that are really overkill for setting rooftop AC units and such. He only does samll lifts, but his prices were great. I will try and see if I can find the name of the Co. to see if he still has it and still uses it. Maybe I could get a few pics if he does.

Re: check it out... our trucks at work

I worked for a Landscape company years ago that had an old 69 Chevy. It was a one ton and had been set up with a boom for lifting by the local power company. The owner of the landscape co. did not have the same affinity for these trucks that we do and had it fitted with a dump bed.It would haul just about anything you could fit on the bed and tow a trailer too.The springs were ordered special extra heavy and then oversize overloads put on to help keep it from swaying when the bucket was used.

Re: check it out... our trucks at work

There are lots of farmers that still use 47-70 Chevy and GMC 2 ton trucks around here for grain and spud harvest. Some of them look like they did when they were new.

Re: check it out... our trucks at work

weve got quite a few farmers who drag out their 67-72 chevy grain trucks for harvest each fall. I damn near work on them for free cause its so cool.
the best part of an old work truck is they are paid for and maintenance is so low.
