Oil dip stick ?

I cant get the dip stick to seal in the block. I put the one i got with the motor in it and it won't seal right. It just spins,i used silacone on it but that didnt work either. I tried a chrome one but couldn't get it in the block. The dip stick is on the pas. side of the truck. Should i get a new stock one from the dealership for the $16? or any other sugg. Its a '71 truck.

Later, jw

Re: Oil dip stick ?

There are two sizes of dipstick tubes. Most of the later model (on passenger side) use a slightly smaller tube. Those that have the dips stick on the driver's side have a larger diameter tube, and shorter. I believe the side changed in late 70's early 80's.

Seems most of the aftermarket Dip stick tubes are for the passenger side, and even there most of the ones I tried always seemed to be loose. My crate engine had the ability to have the tube on either side, and I picked up a dealer tube and stick for the driverside and plugged the passenger side.

I would definitely try the dealer tube. Remember to ask for the one that goes for the motor, not the year of the truck.

Re: Oil dip stick ?

i'd try putting vise grips to the tube you've got and squash it slightly egg shaped to get it tight as a temp fix if its holding you up on driving it but that way it will probally leak a bit

I did this to mine and put a dab of RTV around the lip on the tube worked fine.
