Best rear drop?

Working on my first '72 project and wanting to know which rear drop would be best for ride quality. 6" drop coils or 2" blocks and 4" coils?

Re: Best rear drop?

First off, welcome. I don't believe there is a difference in ride between the two, I've had a truck dropped 4'' in the rear and one dropped 6'' and didn't notice a difference. I'd go for the 6'' springs since the springs are the same price and then you don't need to spend money on the blocks.

Re: Best rear drop?

you'll want to plan on a c notch in there too. the axle will probably slam into the frame a lot

Re: Best rear drop?

I was wondering about the c notch and forgot to ask earlier. Is the adjustable panhard a must have? I've got it completely apart and was gonna do the bushings, just trying to get a complete list together so I know what to order.

Re: Best rear drop?

a 4" drop would be better with an adjustable panhard bar, drop shocks and shock relocators...

So a 6" drop would need these for sure...

Re: Best rear drop?

Im doing a 7" drop in the rear with 5" springs and 2" blocks. Adjustable panhard bar, drop shocks, shock relocater kit, c-notches, and drop center crossmember-- BUT I havent started on the rear yet- just got the front end together yesterday (5.5" drop) 3" springs and 2.5" drop spindles. I bought my truck somewhere around Hardinsburg btw lol Good to see another KY guy on here! Good luck man!

Re: Best rear drop?

As with many posted above... just run the 6" spring. It's what I installed on my '69 (w/o a notch) and I have yet to bottom out.

Re: Best rear drop?

I've run 6 inch springs on a good number of trucks with no c notch and never had a bottoming issue either.

Re: Best rear drop?

I appreciate all the info. Like I said first build so I'll probably have a million more questions. Soon as I figure out how I'll get a build thread started so you can see what I'm working with. Haven't figured out the pic upload yet

This is what I have done, but I'd really like to drop it another inch...or two. Geeze, it never ends.

Re: Best rear drop?

With a 6" drop, i would get ECE's Super Track Bar kit. It relocates the panhard bar to get better articulation and proper geometry. I used one with with my 5" rear drop and it's a major ride improvement over the adjustable panhard bar with 4" drop.

I agree. No need for a C-notch with a 6" or less drop.

Re: Best rear drop?

my bad. I forget that a burb is a tad heavier in the back. I put 4 inch drop springs, and had an inch between the frame and axle. Sitting on the tailgate (I'm only 205 - 210 pounds) would slam the axle into the frame.

Re: Best rear drop?

6" springs, great when the truck is empty. i do a little towing and hauling id like to pick up some air shocks or bag it. i ride the crap out of the umpstops when the truck is loaded, it doesnt ride horrible but id like the unloaded ride when im towing.
