I need to remove the pilot bushing from my crank. How do I do that easily???

Take a chisel and crack the pilot bushing. It will shatter it. Thats the way i do it.

If you have an old imput shaft or clutch alignment tool you can fill the hole in the bushing with grease and put the tool in the bushing and keep packing grease in and it gets behind the bushing and pushes the bushing out..George

Hello Brad, I have always had good luck with finding a bolt that will catch just enough threads to tap itself into the bushing at which point when tightened in far enough it will push the bushing right out of the crank. I just used this method on that 67 that you saw in the shop earlier today, its fast and simple. Hope that works for ya, Cb/Mel

i agree that the grease thing works the easiest and the best. my dad showed me how to do it, like was posted above fill the hole in the bushing with grease, then poke the input shaft in and hit it with a hammer. it may take a couple of raps to get it started, and you will have to add more grease as the bushing moves outward. this is the absolute easest method i have tried, and it has the added benefit of not destroying the bushing.
you may have a small amount of grease squeeze back out around the shaft but it won't be much. and no it won't squirt you. hold the shaft with a grease rag to keep it off your hand. once you do it you'll realize how slick that little trick is.

I have a snap on light duty slide hammer with a pilot bearing remover attachment. Worked great last week. Harbor freight sells a kit just like mine for about $20 and it works just as well, you can also use the slide hammer for various other jobs.

do the no "tools" necessary....use the grease and rod thing.....I use to use bolts or whatever shaft I could come up with that matched the pilot hole size a little grease, and a hammer.....

Just put one in about a month ago..took all of 5 minutes....The best way is to get a pilot bearing remover tool from snap-on or a mac. dealer....its easy ...myself i don't like hammering on the crank ,besides with the motor in the truck there aint a lot of room. You can try them all but in the long run that tool saves a lot of cussing and bleeding knuckles...lots of luck.

Works for me.Can use alignment tool,also.It`s a hydraulic "un-press"...same principle.

If the bushing/bearing is stubborn, you can buy/rent the tool at Autozone, Napa, O'Reilly's, etc. Never tried the grease method again after it failed for me years ago - of course it doesn't cost much to try.

Always used the puller along with the biggest allen key that I could fit between the puller legs to keep them from bending and pulling through. I guess Murphy's Law has always applied more to me than the rest of ya'll.

The grease in the hole trick never has worked for me. I tried it a couple of times and I would give up with my bad shoulder hurting, banged up knuckles and grease everywhere.

I've always wound up trying alternatives. The bolt in the hole as mentioned by classic Bowties has worked as well as renting or borrowing a pilot removal tool.

The problem with buying is that you'll have a tool that you will use only once, maybe twice unless you do mechanical work for a living or if you loan it out to friends.

I take a tap and tap threads into it and keep threading until the bushing comes out. SUPER EASY!
