Ok guys, this is a really dumb question. How do I keep the doors locked? I have tried everything I can think of. I know to lock the door you push down on the inside door handle. but when you close it the door unlocks. I have also tried pressing down the button when I close it. Doesnt work either.

I am also curious on how people lock their hoods.

uh... well My truck for instance, you cannot lock the hood. Also, I lock the passenger door from the inside once closed, then use a key to lock the driver's door. If you dont have a key for it, too bad, so sad.

HAHA.. so it needs key ehh. ok then... so sad!

I know the hoods dont have a lock but there is a chain technique with regular lock that some use. I just dont know where they wrap it around.

I would guess that if he didn't have door key he wouldn't want to lock the door anyways!! The door locks don't work in the way that newer vehicles work- it keeps the button from going in- not the latch from unlatching. You could get a hood latch from a mid 70's or newer truck that has the cable release on the inside and modify it to work. You could also install different latches in the doors to make them operate in more of a modern manner.

this may be a stupid question but why are you trying to lock the door if you dont have a key? just wondering.

actually, I didnt realize that my key didnt even fit in the doors, I just assumed. When I was trying to lock it thats when I realized... wait a minute this key is for the ignition only!

Anyway, I can always take the handles to have keys made. Right?

I would just get a new lock/key, they're fairly cheap, and easy to replace. My biggest problem was the rusty screws holding the door panel on.

my key fits both the door and the ignition on both of my trucks....

From the factory, the standard cab trucks had a keyed lock on the drivers side door. The Custom Cab trucks also had a keyed lock on the passenger side door, as well as, a keyed glove box lock. Originally, one key fit all four locks. Aftermarket kits are available, including drivers door, passenger door, glove box and ignition. They are under $100.00 and are well worth the investment, not to mention the added security and novelty.

I believe Classic Parts, formerly Chevy Duty, as well as, LMC Truck and many other aftermarket truck parts suppliers sell these kits. Good luck with your project.

Thats what I did to the Chief when I got it...was install all new locks...came in a kit...both doors, glove box, and new ign. tumbler...all the same key.

It was way under $100...not sure exactly what it was.
