2 bbl or 4 bbl??

after reading the terrific thread by malibukasey i have a question for the owners that have done this swap and their results.

my 62 has the 283 with a 2bbl,stock intake, powerglide with 373's.i also have a aluminum 4bbl intake with a edelbrock carb that i was thinking about installing.the carb came of a friends 283 and ran well so there won't be any expenses besides gaskets. i put 3000 miles on it last year with half of it being highway and the rest in town.now my question pertaining to fuel milage is has anyone seen a big difference in economy between the two.i am leaning towards the 4bbl for extra power "not hot rodding" just some added power but on the other hand i like the original looks of a oil bath and stock carb.and the 2bbl runs well.this is one choice that if there is little to no difference in them i will keep it stock.i have good knowledge in these areas with older ford big blocks but i hav'nt played with small block chevrolets in this way for over 30 years.

thanks for any input.

Re: 2 bbl or 4 bbl??

What is the size of the 4bbl you have? The 4 can be more efficient than the 2 if you keep your foot out of it. Make sure its not too large.

I have a 500cfm with a performer intake, TH350, 3.08 gears and I get 13mpg in town. I dont do the highway much so I dont have a figure for that.

a 650 will be way too much!! I had one on mine and you could almost see the fuel coming out of the tail pipes. I went down to a 500 and had more power and better milage.
