Question Shimming after swap?

I went from a 350/203 to a 465/205... Torqued everything right while apart... But after i got done my starter just makes a... Growing/grinding/horrible noise and it won't turn it over... The flywheel looks good, it's brand new... 11" if i remember right. How do tell how much it needs adjusted? How do you adjust it? I tried the starter off my 350 and it made this noise, so i pulled the one off my c30 parts truck which looked pretty new, and same noise... Help! I'm ready to drive this thing lol

Re: Shimming after swap?

Are you using the correct knurled shank starter bolts and a brace on the end to the block?

Re: Shimming after swap?

Get a brace. It will help.
Meanwhile slide underneath and manually slide the gear from the starter drive into the ring gear teeth. A screwdriver works to lever it. See how the teeth mesh. Shim the starter so that a paper clip will fit where the teeth mesh. Also look for how deep the starter gear goes into the ring gear teeth.
Once you have that set up have someone crank it over for you and watch what the starter does. If it deflects you might need new bolts and a brace.

Re: Shimming after swap?

What do you mean by deflects? Also where could one get a brace? Nearest j-yard is louisville, almost 2 hours away

Re: Shimming after swap?

DEflects. It will move on the end closest to the motor mount due to the torque of the rotating starter motor. THat's why a brace helps. And new bolts help too. Without a brace the old bolts get bent a touch and when you tighten them they'll move the starter enough to make it grind. Summit has braces. Here's a sample.

If you're handy with a hammer and hacksaw you can make one from a piece of angle iron.

Re: Shimming after swap?

If you have all the correct components, no shims will be needed. As mentioned earlier, the front brace is very important. Good luck, keep after it, you will figure it out.

Re: Shimming after swap?

I don't have any spare iron around... Had to use it for my step braces. It's only 10 bucks too... I'ma stop in at o'reilly's abd get some new bolts n shims... Thanks geezer for the input. My truck was a mud truck who's philosophy was less is better... Not always true lol.

Re: Shimming after swap?

Little progress? I got it to spin over and it will, just seems like it isn't turning fast or hard enough? Even with 24V to it. Gap looks good i had 2 1/32 and 2 1/64 shim in just the left bolt farthest from the crank.

Re: Shimming after swap?

Anyone have a clue? Swapped i different column to see if different ignition switch fixes it and it didn't. .020 .040 n .060 none fix it. I'm at a loss. Only thing different now is my 4spd and 205 switch why wouldn't it stay the same?

Re: Shimming after swap?

Wired wrong!
Purple wire from ignition goes to 'S' terminal on solenoid.

Re: Shimming after swap?

But the stickler tickler is i never touched the wiring. Only difference is i went from a 78 k20 wiring in cab harness to a 77 c30 harness. Are there supposed to be 4 pink wires tied into 1? Looked like heavy guage wires as well... Looked factory.

Re: Shimming after swap?

Well it sounds like you're getting power to the purple wire from somewhere in your wiring harness. When it keeps cranking does it stop if you turn the ignition switch off?

Re: Shimming after swap?

So that means nothing wrong with your wiring in cab. Problem lies at the starter.
Check the wiring there. Pull it off, clean the solenoid connections and the wires, make sure you have no bare spots on the wires and see what it does.

Re: Shimming after swap?

Well took the r-starter off. Put on good tested one. Same thing. Just sounds horrible and not right still. Good clean connections and no bare wires. Purple to right terminal other 2 to top. .020 shim stays as does .040 and .060

Re: Shimming after swap?

Purple to right terminal is wrong. IIRC it's purple to left terminal which should be marked 'S'.

Re: Shimming after swap?

OK I see my manual shows only one terminal which has the purple wire and it is on the right closer to the block. What's the other two wires for or hooked to what? I assume one comes from the battery. What about the other one?
