Question Blasting costs

I was hoping that some of you guys that have had your projects blasted could share what it cost and wanted to see if anyone in NE Ohio had suggestions on who to use.
Thanks

Re: Blasting costs

the only thing I've had blasted are rims. It's $20 a wheel where I get them done. I built my own blaster for anything that will fit 48"x30"x24". the gloves were the most expensive $50 if I recall. I used to run a Craftsman compressor. Gave you a lot of time to ponder. I bought a used Quincy 2 stage, now I can't keep up.My brother/in/law gave me a whole house vac, works good. Black beauty is only 10/15 bucks a bag at Menards.Name: HPIM2108.jpg

Don't know if it'll help you any but a guy in Oklahoma just blasted my frame rails and primed them for $40. Told me $150 for a blasted and primed cab.

Re: Blasting costs

Had an entire 1950 chevy 3100 blasted, all body and frame, for $1500. I have a vendor that gets $300 for a typical frame.

Re: Blasting costs

Investigate the cost to using a blaster from a local Rental Equipment Co. If you have a driveway and a truck to pull a mounted blaster unit. Those have a mounted compressor capable of handling the task. I called around previously, was quoted about $200 a day plus a deposit. Provide your own blasting material available many places depending on what you use. Just be careful about warping sheet metal. A full day should be plenty of time to blast what you need depending on beer breaks for well under $400.

Re: Blasting costs

Heat n friction does a job on flat metal..ie doors..hoods. cab roof. You can save a boat load of coin that way if you have the means and prep ahead of time.

Re: Blasting costs

A friend loaned me his small blaster but I have a decent commercial type compressor. Requires a good compressor system blasting a larger job like this. To do it over again a trailer mounted system loaner would be my choice and much faster. I think I used about 3 bags of material for my frame and less than $10 a bag at the local home improvement store. Biggest headache was the cleanup afterwards.

Re: Blasting costs

$220 for entire frame, crossmember, and about 5 other odds and ends here in Utah.

One thing that will help you be paint ready after blasting is removing the engine, rear suspensions, and trans x members. This will help the blaster get up into their crevices more efficiently.

Re: Blasting costs

Also, the crew I used told me that blasting body parts shouldn't be scary IF whoever you are using has enough PSI to make one pass and not have to hover on one section to remove the paint. These guys are industrial blasters and their equipment pulls everything in one pass, hence not heating up/warping sheet metal.

Re: Blasting costs

In NE Oregon you can have your frame blasted & Powder Coated for $150.00 ! Problem is they use steel blasting shot, bad stuff, they can't seem to get it all out of crevice's and rust form soon after. Look at this wheel, the space between the rim and center has blasting material imbedded in it.....

Re: Blasting costs

I had a mobile blasting service come by and do some stuff for me. $150 an hour which includes all materials. He showed up with a bunch of different grades of crushed glass. He did my cab inside and out including the floor, bedsides and bed floor for around $800. He earned his money...worked hard and the best part is that it was done at my house.

Re: Blasting costs

Thanks for the replies guys, now I just have to decide if Im going to rent the equipment (Our local rental place does not have the all in one unit. I would have to rent a few different things) or have it done. Im looking for a local mobile guy to get a quote and see. And also looking at local body shops.

I hope I can find a local mobile guy though to tell the truth.

There is no rust, but there are about 5 different paint jobs piled up on her...

I rented a commercial pressure pot blaster to blast my chassis, it cost me $125 for the day, If i would have rented a pull behind compressor (diesel 185 CFM) it would have been another $125. I was able to borrow one mrom my work, just had to pay for my fuel. I used crushed recycled glass for media, it cost me .13 cents a pound, and it's available in many grit sizes. I bought 600 pounds for $78.00 I made a containment "Burm" out of heavy poly sheeting, and after I went through all of the 50 pound bags, I reclaimed the used glass, sifted it through some old screen door screen material and reused it until I was done. took me about 4 hours to blast all my parts. plus, I got it done to my liking too.
Hope this helps.

I bought my crushed glass at a local place in Kansas City,KS. called
Canfield and Joseph. Here is a link:

http://www.canfieldjoseph.com/crushed-glass.php

locations are in: Ft. Worth, Houston ,Kansas City, St. Louis and Tulsa.

Most any foundry and or industrial coatings suppliers should have crushed glass. look up blasting media suppliers for your state/area in the phone book.
Hope this helps!

Re: Blasting costs

Just another fact I just learned. Took over about 10 pieces to be pc'd yesterday and after he threw them in the oven he called me to tell me to get the pieces blasted again.

Essentially I didnt request virgin material to be used, so the blasters used recycled material which often in tainted with other projects grease/leftovers. So when blasting, it cleans off the metal, but leaves residue in the metal's pores.

Long story short, if you plan on powder coating after blasting, request the pieces be blasted with virgin media.
