Temp sender location (options)
Hey guys, so I'm trying to get some feed back on the most ideal location to put the temp sender for my temperature gauge. The stand alone harness I purchased from Howell industries uses the the stock LS sender location on the front of the drivers head so that would be a no go for there. I have two places I could put it. Option 1 would be the auto meter 2259 & 2277 kit on the back of the passenger head. Option 2 would be the stock 71 sender in the bung that entropy radiator brazed in. I'm just wondering if anyone has had experience with either location and how accurate your readings on the gauge were vs actual engine temperatures. Thanks, Curt

Hello Curtb1971. i have always used the rear port of the passenger side cylinder head with the use of an autometer, electric water temp gauge. it has always been successful. good luck, clark.

x2 on the passenger head port.
Word of caution on that autometer fitting, it is quite thin walled, be careful tightening it into the head. Mine broke without much effort. I found a nice stainless one someplace after that, ebay I think. I have also drilled and tapped the WP near upper radiator hose for a third sensor before and that worked well. You have a port in the radiator near the top hose already so I don't see much issue using that either. they all three read pretty close to each other for me. |

Thanks guys for the input. Hmm, I think I'll run both sensors wired parrell and get both readings, well the highest temp. Can't hurt right? I failed to mention I'm running the oem 67-72 temp gauge. I've read that the LS run's hotter then small blocks so it may be a tick over what I'd be used to reading on say a small block. Might need to do some more research on that. I also used the pass side head for my gauge...my 6.0 runs about 180-185....but that's where they programmed my fans to come on. ...and mine has a 160deg thermostat in it...

I believe my LS3 has a stock 187* stat in it. Seems to run around 205-210* in these things. My LS1 was the same and my 2017 6.2L genV LT runs 210 normal temp.

More info on this passenger side head port please. Is the hole already there or what? Sorry for the dumb question but I'm not near my engine.

If your look at the picture of the head that I posted there is a silver allen head bolt in between the exhaust manifold and the black allen bolt holding a ground wire. The silver allen bolt is where the temp sensor port is. Just remove the bolt and wa la

keep in mind that hole is metric...you'll need a adapter if your using elec gauges...I used mechanical gauges so to get the sender in I had to drill and tap the hole out to npt...

I put grease on the drill bit and tap...most of the shavings stuck to the bit....behind that hole there is a small cavity in the head that held the rest of the shavings....used a shop vac to get the rest...I googled it before I did it..this seems to be the common approach to it other than pulling the head

I used the auto meter adapter on passager head be carefule its thin walled i had to drill mine out a bit fo the sender to go though and i was nerous but it didnt break

I'm not really crazy about drilling the head, is there not a metric sender that would read close ? I have the original mechanical gauge so probably not.

Check this thread out. I opted for the echlin TS6655. I haven't finished my swap yet so I'm unsure how accurate it will be but should be close. There is an example of a closer to stock temp in there. Take note though that I did have to drill out the auto meter adapter a little bit on the smooth portion to fit the sensor side of the sender.

I used the F-body temp sender: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php?p=8151720
It requires changing the later style 2 pin plug to the f-body 3 wire plug. I added a resistor on the gauge to correct it.
