Looking for custom 4-link info

I have decided to put a 4-link in the back half of my 1966 GMC 3/4 ton. The problem is I have very basic knowledge of the setup. What I was wondering if anyone could point in the direction of any books or articles that will help me with the process. Post from this board or others discussing positioning and angles would also greatly help. Please don't suggest I buy a prebuilt package. I am looking for the challenge, learning experince and to hopefully save some money.

Thanks
Doug

Re: Looking for custom 4-link info

Here's what I've heard. If you go with a triangulated set up the angled links should be at least 30 degrees to eliminate side to side travel. Also, the link bars should be parallel with the ground at ride height. That's about all I know (if any of it is indeed true, I used a pre-made kit on mine). Good luck and be sure to start a build thread when you start cuttin'.

Welcome to the forum Doug19. I am curious as to what made you decide on building a custom 4 link? I am all for the do it yourself mentality, but there are several ready made options that would save a lot of work.

Re: Looking for custom 4-link info

N2TRUX,

Here is a picture of my truck(1966 GMC 3/4 ton leaf srping) and how it currently sits. I would like to lower the truck so the body is 10" off the ground(ride height). I want to stay away from air bags and not spend a huge amount of money on the rear section of the truck. I can weld and have no problem notching the rear and losing some bed space. So what do you think a good route for me to go is?

Re: Looking for custom 4-link info

Ok, lets take another look at this. What are your goals here besides lowering the truck? Do you want to maintain the load capacity of your 3/4 ton? Do you want to keep the 8 lug wheels? Do you plan to convert to disc brakes?

If you don't want air springs, then your looking at a static drop. Since you have a leaf spring rear suspension, you can do a flip kit. In the front you can run drop spindles if you want to convert to disc brakes.

Lets get more details on the table before we give in depth answers.

Re: Looking for custom 4-link info

I do not plan on pulling a trailer or putting much of anything in the bed of the truck as I own a newer truck that I use for this. I also plan on changing out to 5 lug.

Would the following be possible and if so what major problems would I need to resolve:

1.Notch
2.Axle flip 5"-6"
3.Lowering Shackles 2"
4. Lowering Blocks or Remove leafs for remaining desired drop

For the front I see that Porterbuilt plans on coming out with a dropmember that will run coilovers and might go that route. That would give me power steering and 5 lug disc brakes.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.
