Lifting cab with doors using engine hoist ?

I wanted to know if anyone has lifted their cab with an engine hoist and left the doors on. I've seen someone do it before with the doors on but don't remember where. I was thinking of taking out the seat and gas tank of course and using some straps to lift it and roll down the window then stick the hoist through the window opening. I was planning on buying a 2 ton hoist instead of renting one because I could later use it for pulling the engine and transmission out and can use it on another project later on as well. I would appreciate any help on this and if you have pics of lifting a cab with the doors still on using a hoist I would appreciate it if you could post them.

Re: Lifting cab with doors using engine hoist ?

Assuming you are doing this by yourself, ithink its going to be kinda tough. Keep in mind that the cab will be front heavy( the firewall side) especially when you take the seat and gas tank out. Sounds like you have the right idea though. Personally i would wrap two strapes around the floor pan. Meaning open up the doors, run both straps under the cab through the cab. Then hook your hoist to them through the window and balance it. Again it will be kinda tough cause that thing will want to swing on ya. Personally i would buy the one hoist then rent or borrow a second and put one on each side, then roll the frame out from under it.

Re: Lifting cab with doors using engine hoist ?

I saw a pic on here of someone doing it before but I don't remember who.
I did this when taking my ford rangers cab off but I had to take the door off because I couldn't get the hoist through the window opening at the right enough angle. But I took the door off and used chains bolted to the factory cab mounts.

Re: Lifting cab with doors using engine hoist ?

67mach1 tried this. Had a beam running through the door windows at the back corner. The hoist went in the window and lifted up on the center of the beam. That part worked. What happened was, if you grab it from the side, the hoist is in the way of rolling the frame out from under it. The setup he had didn't reach far enough to grab it from the front, but I'm sure it could be done.

Ended up just using a one ton chainfall to lift it straight up, worked like a charm. Just hooked to the same beam running through the windows. You can get a one ton chain fall for prob less than 40 bucks at tractor supply or harbor freight.

No damage done, everything still opens and closes great.

Additionally, I've used about a 4" diameter branch on big tree and a chainfall to lift a cab. One man job.

He left the doors on, seat in it, and the front cli on as well!

Re: Lifting cab with doors using engine hoist ?

Never really seen the hoist stuck inside the cab, we always would slide a 2x8 through the door windows with some carpet between it and the door frame and wrap the strap around it. Then use a comealong to pick it up, usually under an A frame or even a good heavy tree limb LOL.

Re: Lifting cab with doors using engine hoist ?

With all the glass in it i would be concerned with bending the door frame.
I just used an old street sign post (channel) I found on the side of the road and bolted a 14" piece of 1 1/2" angle iron on each end to lift from the top of the door opening, of course I had the doors off though. It was nice and stable.

Why not pull the doors, It can't be good to put all that stress on them? Remember: if you mess them up you will have to pull them, AND find new ones?

Re: Lifting cab with doors using engine hoist ?

I've only done it with doors off, from the side then rolled the cab to the left or right away from the frame. I notched a 4x4 to fit the pinch weld at the corners above the vent window location. If you lift from the floor your center of gravity is sooo low it may want to flip and be too squirley. I don't have pics of the gizmo I made handy, sorry.

Re: Lifting cab with doors using engine hoist ?

I did this last weekend with a notched 4X4 and a 2 ton harbor freight lift. Cut some 1/2 inch deep gaps with a circular saw that are wide enough to fit the doors, strap it to your hoist, put it through either the drive or passenger window towards the windshield, and lift. Took me alone about 5 minutes.
There was another guy on here that did the same thing that had pictures.
Hope this helps.

Re: Lifting cab with doors using engine hoist ?

I made a rectangular frame work out of 2 x 4's, with the cross braces sitting on top so that they would prevent the cab from shifting side to side. Then in the center I positioned the pivot point off center (front to back) with it set closest to the front of the cab, did not know for sure, but as seen on here and after looking the thing over, figured it would be nose heavy. I drilled a hole in my pivot point and put a piece of rebar (scrap) throught that and turned the lift arm upside down on hoist so the hole was on the top side of the arm. If you like I will get pictures of it, kind of hard to explain the thing here, but it worked great to lift the cab. I lifted mine with no doors on it, but the lift I made would work with doors on it also. If I were going to lift it with the doors on, I would get some rigid plastic door shims (like shims used to install a door in your home, they are wedge shaped) and place them between the upper door frame and cab to help prevent the door frames from bending. Mine was made of four stud grade 2x4's, with a total cost of less than $10. I will get a picture later and post it on here, was way cheap and worked great....maybe help some of you guys out with getting your cabs on and off.

Re: Lifting cab with doors using engine hoist ?

I dont have pictures but I did mine that way by putting eye bolts in the cab mount holes. I first jacked the cab up and blocked it off the frame then removed the cab mounts. If you use four rachet straps you can adjust it to hang level. If I ever do another one I would take the doors off.
