Poll Which Truck would you invest in?

Ok...here is the question:
Option A: I have a 1970 CST with the following options: LWB, 402BB, 400 Turbo, AM-FM, Tilt, Tinted Windows, Tach, Buckets etc
I am plannning on taking my truck to the body shop this fall for a full resto. I was given an estimate of about $20,000

Option B
Quote:
WIW factory original paint 72 4x4 SWB
Hotfun has the 72 4x4 w/28,000 miles, ac, auto, tilt etc. Price will be between $20-25,000. More info can be found on the above post.

If you had to decide...which way would you go? Fix up he 70cst or the...
loaded and rust free original 4x4 Cheyenne short box?

This is a tough decision...thought it would good to hear your thoughts. It's a lot of money either way but this has been a goal of mine for many years and now it getting close to making a decision.

For my money I would go with the 4x4 just for the fact they are only original once. But that said you may feel uncomfortable driving it because if anything happens its not the same. Good luck on your decision wish I has the $$$ to make it.

Re: Poll Which Truck would you invest in?

Buy the 28,000 mile 4x4 and store your big block truck for a later restoration (it never hurts to have 2 nice trucks) -- who knows, maybe someday you could get around to doing some of the work to the CST yourself and have some fun with that. That way you could spread it out over a couple of years -- ( a resto. always ends up costing about the same, no matter who does it tho -- doing work yourself means you are saving $$$, but costing time , and time is $$$ too)

Your CST is a rare, loaded truck, but one with 28k in as nice an original condition as that 4-by is even rarer for 35 year old machinery.

This way when your CST is done, you'll have a choice on the weekends

I would probably nab the second truck while I could.
Save the other for later.

I LOVE your truck and I am not a big 4x4 person, but I got to agree on this point. Get the 4x4 and keep your 70 for later.

I like 67-72 4x4s. However, I wouldn't bother buying a 4x4 unless I was going to use it, and it would be a shame to beat on a classic. Restore yours and get a 73-87 4x4.

Re: Poll Which Truck would you invest in?

It would be hard for me to put that kind of money in a lwb, if for no other reason than it would cost the same to build a swb and when they were finished.........well we know they wouldn't be worth the same. I have a 72 swb K10 and yes it's rare and yes i enjoy driving it, but it doesn't attract near the attention that my C10 does. So, I guess I don't have an answer, aside from go with your gut! (Oh! Yes I use the 4x4......for cruising around in. You don't have to engage the 4wd to enjoy it! I don't go around trying to drive under things in my lowrider.)

I think the key word in your question is "invest". The SWB will always be the better investment.

Always cheaper in the long run to buy something original or finished, When you are restoring or customizing it sometimes never ends.

I voted to buy.

I'd definately go with the 4x4. You don't find ones like that every day. Keep the longbed to redo on your own, or sell it to offset the cost of the 4x4. Just my opinion of what I'd do under the same circumstances. ...Joe

i think you'd lose less money on the original truck if you went to cash in

Ok...THE DECISION IS MADE!!!First I want to thank all of you for your comments and the poll was 80% for the 4x4 and 20% for the CST...but...As I mentioned I am fixing this truck up to drive and hand over to my son 70cstjr some day. When 70cstjr mentions his brother you need to know that my son...and 70cstjr's brother ...was killed in a car wreck shortly after we purchased my C10 70cst so there are a lot of very good memories with this truck. It has become sort of family and was never meant it to be an investment. With this being said...in my heart I know the 70cst is the truck to fix up and keep. The truck that HOTFUN has is a very, very, nice truck and is worth every penny that he is asking, but his 4x4 deserves a home where it will be kept as a show truck and not a DD. JMHO.With this said it's the "pedal-to-the-metal" as we take the "Green Machine" to the shop this fall and get new life breathed into her. Thanks again for all your feedback. This board is family so let the party begin! 70cst

Re: Poll Which Truck would you invest in?

I didn't read that your decision was made before I clicked on the Restore option.

There are nice LWB trucks out there that have been rodded/restified. You can do everything to it that can be done to a SWB. They show very well when lowered more extremely, like a 3.5/6.0 drop from ECE.

If you wanted it to be short, there are options in shortening the chassis.

With a $20K budget, it should be nice, but nothing is going to replace the family bond that it already has going on. Doing anything less will probably leave you with a "Gee, I wish I had...." feeling.

but please don't shorten that loaded CST (unless you do it with a donor frame- a cut frame will hurt it)--- with buckets, tach, and a big block, that truck sounds as loaded as one gets --

Sounds like you made the right decision for you and your fam. --- good luck with the project and post some progress pics for inspiration for the rest of us

No clue. Ive never had $20K to buy a truck. Myself, Id probably buy 20 $1K trucks or 4 $5K trucks. I have a ball in my cheap truck.

I voted the 4x4 strictly as an investment option.

Re: Poll Which Truck would you invest in?

Maybe I should not have used the word "investment." I will eventually hand this truck down to 70cstjr...Just before I get my "Wheelchair License." Maybe the question I should have asked should be...which truck would have more of a fun factor to drive around and then hand it down to 70cstjr? I appreciate your feedback.

personaly i think putting 20 g's in any truck is a poor investment. there is just no room left to profit from it. nice trucks can be had for less than half of that that leave room to profit from with a much broader market, jmo
