Air Compressor

Mine is starting to get weak. I have a sand blast cabinet, and use various air tools, DA, impacts and so on. What kinda deals are out there? Was looking at Tractor Supply's Ingersoll Rand 5HP 80 gal upright, $1100. What works and what don't?

Re: Air Compressor

Google IR failures and you won't buy one. They're famous for dying. I seem to recall the pump is junk as well as the motors.
I'd look at Northern Tool and the Quincy 5HP model 251CS80VCB. Last time I looked they had the Baldor 1725 RPM motor (a 3450 RPM motor to me is a sign of a cheap setup). The pump looks the same as the one they've been making for 100 years. http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...0476_200350476

I trolled CL until I found a barely used Saylor-Beall with about the same specs as the Quincy in the link but half the price. Its a VT-730 which is what's in the pic at the link below. The same right down to the stickers and red tag. http://www.saylor-beall.com/air-comp...unted-vertical

Here's the 80 gallon at TS. http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/stor...pressor-80-gal
3450 RPM motor, cheesy looking pump.

Re: Air Compressor

American Industrial air compressors is the brand I reccomend! I've been beating on mine for 6 years and she doesn't slow down! They are great to work with and have a lot of parts in house.

Re: Air Compressor

I'm going to research my compressor and see what it will cost to rebuild mine. My 5HP motor isn't very old. Maybe someone on here can tell me more about it that knows more than I do. Garden Denver Co., Model ADD1011, Bore 4 1/4 and 2 1/4, stroke 3 1/2. RPM 770, and the serial # is 616030. I thought about just buying a pump, but I've been told that the comp pump I have is big bucks if you have to buy it. My thought was, I done replaced the motor, if I rebuild the pump or replace it, then the tank will go.

Re: Air Compressor

gardner denver is a good compressor, you can rebuild it for a couple hundred
it has reed valves and gaskets in the rebuild kit and they're easy to rebuild
get a piece of granite to flat lap the valve body, it's a flat piece of steel

you won't find anything comparable for less than $2500

ours is a t20, 3 phase, 5 hp, 25 cfm, i've rebuilt it a couple times in 10 yrs; we use it hard
we just pulled it out 2 weeks ago and put in a 10 hp 37 cfm

Re: Air Compressor

I have an Eaton, 5HP, single stage 80 gallon tank. It does great with my sandblaster and air tools. If you are going to get a new one, I would suggest getting a 2 stage, instead of single stage. http://www.eatoncompressor.com/catal...53/8847322.htm

like i said... you won't find anything comparable for less than $2500
$108 for the kit is a lot less than $2500

get a flat surface, don't use steel, it won't be flat enough
granite is best, but a mirror will work in a pinch
flat sand the reed plate, start with 400 grit

the kit doesn't include bearings, just pull the top of the head off

Re: Air Compressor

I got a 80 Gal Quincy compressor, i also posted a thread here when i was looking for one..

Its got a Baldor motor and the compressor is fully Amarican made, fully rebuildable..

I did however have a warrenty issue pretty much right out of the gate but Quincy sent a local firm out no questions asked and fixed it no charge to me.. What was the issue? somebody neglected to install the compressor shaft oil seal so when i fired it up it spewed oil allover.. I'm sure mine was an isolated incident.
