Acetone in gas for mileage - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hi, another question which I know has been discussed before here with mixed reviews, but I'd like to know in my situation:

Does adding 1-3 oz of acetone to 10 gal gas improve MPG? Will it harm any components like fuel lines, the engine or my Edelbrock carb? You guys can help me decide whether I should experiment with it or not.

It may clean out some carbon, but no real mileage increase. I tried it a few year ago with laboratory grade Acetone. On the truck (carbed), on the Durango (FI), and on the Cavalier (small engine FI). No change on any of them.

it dropped my co's in phoenix from 23% to 6%... put the whole can in the tank...... its a huge debatable deal....... personally i think it worked for me.... others maybe not.

ive heard it just cleans out some carbon...

but i wouldnt put it in vehicles with catalict(sp?) converters, they say it will melt it!

If it causes a catalytic converter to melt then I wouldn't put it in anything. Threeway Catalytic converters start to degrade at 1400 degrees. At that temp the converter starts to cavitate it actually looks like some one took a torch to them.

Anything that hot you would also be taking at chance at cracking manifolds or even exhaust ports on your heads.

I have no experiance with acetone, but I do run emissions on industrial equipment if you have a catalyst that melts you got big problems.

It increases the EGT (exhuast gas temprature) exponentialy. Usually by 40-60% depending on the content added and will in time seriously damage all exhaust components.

I tried this a few years ago in an old 88 Subaru GL. I didn't see any noticable change in fuel mileage.

i used it to go thru phoenix emissions ...failed first time..... can of acetone in tank....... dropped co's from 23% to 6% ...... like i said its a huge bag o worms and it will work for some and not for others.....
WORKED FOR ME so im happy....

Moth balls (Benzene)...drop a few in the tank and watch what happens!!!

I tried the Acetone in my 01 G35 van. I drove for a month and it appeared to get better mileage but past the first month when I returned to driving like I normally do the mileage fell back to its usual MPG. So it didn't help me.

I used in my Little S10 I put 2-3 ozs in, My truck did run better, but I didn't calculate mileage savings. 2.8L needs anything it can get to get more power out it.

thats only worthwhile if ya "ACTUALLY NEED"more octane....

if it was a good idea, then it would have been all overr the news last year when gas was 4 to 5 bucks a gallon.
Moth balls works on octane, but is rough on your engine. I wish i could remember why... one of the car mags did an article on it about 10 or 12 years ago.... not a good idea.

again aint no one news related/oil comp/gas company et.. gonna tell ya that it does/will work.. takes away from their profit if does work.... (ya ya i must be paranoid).....and again worked for me, didnt work for you, like it says in the article (must be the truth since its on the web) there are lots and lots of factors that come into play....
