Chrome windshiled trim
I have been putting chrome bits on my 49 truck and last year put the chrome outer door window trim on and now i can only find stainless for the windshield trim and that does not match the door trims. I have seen chrome on other trucks at shows but can't find it anywhere.is it out there or do you have to have it chromed? Mike

I'm thinking that the originals were/are stainless. As far as I know they were only on 47/50 and there was very little shiny stuff on 51/53 because of the Korean war.

i have never seen chrome windshiled trim, only stainless. for that matter I had never seen chrome window garnish moldings, until now, only stainless previously. I think if you want them to match you might look for a set of stainless window garnish moldings.

The stainless window trims can still be found in backwoods junkyards. They last forever. I bought all 4 pieces for $20. The truck was so rusty I didn't need tools to take them off.

Original trim was only stainless as the guys said. I've got one set saved back that will probably end up in the 1-1/2 ton if my daughter finds out that it is in the stash.
I'd look for some that I could cut out of the donor myself and take a good utility knife with a pack of spare blades and just cut the rubber away on the inside and lift the windshield out and then cut the old rubber away from the stainless and what is left of the glass. You don't want to try to pull the stainless out of the old hard rubber or you will bend it and it bends easy.

If you can find some in good shape, used or new, and you want it chrome, a chrome plating job would be the best bet for you..

I have a hard time distinguishing polished stainless from chrome, and I'd think having the stainless polished would be a lot cheaper than chroming.
I bought a set of original stainless trim for my windshield for $150, but ended up buying some repos because I couldn't get the dents out of the originals. Reproduction trim has its own problems. After having the windshields out several times, I still couldn't get the trim to lay flush around the entire perimeter. It was most severe in the middle where the two sides meet at the bottom. I finally gave up and took it to a glass shop that does a lot of classic cars. The glass guy told me the repo trim is poorly made and won't fit correctly into the rubber. He trimmed the stainless it so it fit much better, but it still wouldn't lay completely flush at the bottom of the windshield. The glass tech filled the small gap between the trim and the rubber with a little black glass adhesive and trimmed the center bar so it'd fit flush too. Here's what it looked like after he finished - not perfect but it really isn't noticeable either |
