I think I just found my B***H

I think i just found the car that I'm gonna get all into restoring. Kinda. It's a '71 Chevrolet Caprice Sport Coupe. Gold. 402BB/th400. 62,000 original miles. Dual exhaust thru glasspacks. He has a pair of headers for it and a Holley 750 Single pumper... Different seats than factory. Um. Has a dented fender and 3 rust spots starting... I wanna get it. But it's 2700. I dont got that kinda cash. He may trade my Nissan Hardbody against some of the price, and i have 500 like right now. I'm gonna try to get a loan. SHOULD I????

Maybe....maybe not.
If you have alot of disposiable income it might be a good idea.
Those are cool cars!

I will warn you though...i spent entriely too much money on my truck in high school and now that i am out i kinda regret it (i still LOVE the truck though ). Unless you have quite a bit of disposiable income, i would advise the best thing to do would be to buy a good, reliable vehicle with decent MPG, which may be had for $2700 if you look hard enough. Then when you get out and get a good job you can start to find and restore whatever classic you want.

I kinda wish i would have done that...i would be in much better shape financially right now (although i learned tons from my truck and enjoy driving it greatly).

IMO - after buying it, you will find plenty of things that will require plenty of dollars. No offense, but if you're cutting it that close financially, this may not be the best move. JMO, and you did ask! Trouble is, for many of us, emotions influence our vehicle purchases. It might turn out just right for you - but I don't think I would do it.

caprices are sweet. my friend has a 66, its teal, centerline rims(the solid kind) very nice stereo, and a mild-moderate 412(.30 over 402)...
just be careful, mechanical lust is a dangerous thing, you get all googlie eyed when you see this thing and all you can do is think about it, so you do what ever you can to get it only to find out the frame is bent, or the body is rotted. just approach it with a clear head, remeber there are other fish in the sea, and make smart decisions, not fast ones. do that and you will come out good. i know i know easier said than done good luck and good hunting

I would also sap pass and buy a Caviler or Sunbird then once you have a real good job get a car like that. I am also a 19 year old who has spent every dollar left on his Truck. I think I regret it. It's still not done and I have close to 8000 in it and still need another 4000 to finish it. I wish I would have just bought a southern rust free truck and shot some paint on droped it stuffed some 18's in the holes and drove it.

But live and learn.

What ever happned to your 67 ? Too much work ?

man you hit the nail on the head
he is right, do what i love to do, dreaming is perfectly ok, personally i would try and find something that belongs to a mechanic, who cares what the body looks like or how much rust it has. find something cheap and reliable like my 92 olds.
now i will tell you this, i went to a highschool with alot of rich kids and they all drove brand new cars or fully restored old ones. but you look at the group of kids who had to work for thiers and you would see many mid 80's to early 90's 4door cars, like me and my friends. here is a list
myself 71chevy rust bucket with a bed
bestfriend 73 bug, 85 buick
girlfriend 90 s10
and the list goes on, i say save your money for something dependable and save your money to further you education, then after doing that you can buy whatever you want and work on it in YOUR OWN garage.

Well. I have a '76 Chevy. That I can drive, it's a rust bucket i picked up for 150. Runs PERFECT. 3/4 ton and ****, that can be my work, skool truck. Then I want the '71 to be my nice car. The body is almost perfect, requiring Max. 500 bucks to finish it up. Then I found some 17" Cragar SS, new aged, they're polished aluminum, and a good stereo and maybe some dressup stuff for the engine compartment. I could have it paid off by the end of my school year, and have the other stuff done by the end of the summer. Also, I have another year of high school left, then off to the Marines. So, i'm not exactly worried about paying for my education for at least another 7 years, and I have nothing better to spend my money on. I could go blow it on dope and alcohol like my friends, but I think this would be a better choice???

Crank,

The 71 Caprice is a nice ride. My 1st car was a 71 Bel Air (same car except slightly shorter and 2 tail lights instead of 3)(350/powerglide) that my Grandfather had. I trashed the PGlide and put in a T350. It was a great car. Looked like the police crusers at the time....yea I'm that old I have seen a few of the caprices around Lexington and man do they bring back memories.

It will get the same mpg as a truck, 10-12 mpg, If you get it try to figure out where you can store it (inside) while you are in the marines. When you get out it will be there waiting.

Good Luck,
Woody

i love them old cars. they are fun and gorgeous but youll never make some kind of racing car out of it its waaay too heavy. as for taking out a loan i dont know if you can afford it bein in school and all. before you buy that car check thoroughly the trunk floor the rear quarters the floorboards and the botom fenders thats where they all rot. theyre also good for having cracks across the middle of the dashboard.i was recently looking at a 73 actually lol when i was a teen i had a pair of 74 impalas great cars

My buddy in High School dad inherited one of those from his dad who bought it new. Looked about the same year. It had white top and dark blue paint. He threw a paint job on it and new top and it was other wise unrestored and every bit as nice as that one. I don't know what motor it had but when I was 14 his dad was having a fun time pinning us to the seats with the gas peddle.

I drove one in High School. (It wasn't cool back then.) It was green with 4 doors. Ride was smooth and power on tap if ever I needed it.

buy that and then all you need is the fuzzy dice and dingle balls around the edges.

Crank,

It does sound as if you have made up your mind, and if so... there's nothing wrong with that... you are in for a new experience and a lesson or three...(which you may not see till later, and you can look back on them)

I love those old 'tanks' too... talk about room!

In high school I had a 75 Impala... In the lowrider world they call it a "Glasshouse" cuz the rear side windows did not open. I think this is the second widest passenger car ever made! (don't know for sure... but close) was my first car, so I have a soft spot.

ain't nuthin' wrong with dingle balls j/k

It looked like this only all white with a black top, and stock wheels and tires. It was super clean, very straight, no rust, and my first 350 motor.

This should be a separate thread altogether.I am in the same boat myself.I wish I just had a driver or bought something already done.Would of been alot cheaper. The only trouble I would see paying the big bucks up front, would be if something went wrong with the truck. At least if you did most of it yourself, you know it was done right

Uh, the car is almost completely solid, i looked at the trunk pan and crap, cuz i was checkin out the dual exhaust. I do have a job enuff to pay off a loan, like around 130 a week. So, if I get a 1500-2000 dollar loan, I'd try like hell to pay it off in 3-4 months. To get it done and stuff. I do have my mind made up about this car, but it's mostly about what he wants to give me for my Nissan, and if I can get a loan. It's an awesome car and damn... I want it.

does the Caprice have an RPO sticker like our trucks?

and, that thing sounds damn cool. as always when you buy an old car, lets hope it doesn't fall apart 2 weeks after you buy it.
