plowing with old style lug tires

I have a 72 K20 that I use for fun, work and plowing my long gravel driveway. I need to replace the tires and the look of the old style 9.50 x 16.5 lug tires would be perfect. Has anyone used these type of tires for plowing or working? I know what the hardcore plow guys are going to say, I'm looking for input on the super traxion lug tires.

we used to use 9.50 16.5 Delta tires I think they are still available and come with the holes for steel studs pre molded in already .

They come out just as fast as they go in , Nothing beats studded snow tires for plowing .

If you are looking for super traxion type tires check out the Power King site.
They have a good following and are really good in snow. I dont have any yet but its what Im going with when the time comes. They dont chunk and last a long time. They are spendy but they combine service life and durability as well as that certain tall skinny look and have decent load ratings as well.

Its what I like so...not for everybody.
Oh and I will add that my truck currently has a similar tire which I think was made by firestone in the early 70's. The tread is great but being so old I wont run them on the street.

Very cool old-school tread appearance. Cant say how they work.

Thanks for all of the input. I guess if I have to get 16" rims I would get a newer style lug tire. The super traxion bias ply come in 16.5 with that old skool look. And lets face it, old skool is cool Is anyone running these?

The STA Superlugs, which are a very good looking tire are available in 9x16, so you don't have to run a 16.5 to get the old skool look!

A lug tire is a traction-type tire intended for rough, off-road service. They have blocky (lugs) agressive treads. Check out the STA link for pics of traction type tires.

I see those are from Interco. I remember back in the day they were made by Denman. I thought those Ground Hawgs were long gone. Never owned any but they are supposed to be very effective in mud and it's easy to see why. Tread is directional and similar to a tractor tire. As the tire rotates forward and slips, mud is forced out towards the side, making it somewhat self-cleaning. Hope I never actually need a tire like that but it's nice to know they're available.

FYI The Cooper Courser LT's are actually Power King tires.

Most of the lug tires out threre are Bias. I would personally stick with a Radial MT style tire. Just about all the tire companies have their own version.

I purchased my truck from a good friend way back in 1994. At the time he swore by and always purchased the bias ply, "lug" tires.

I HATED them. If ALL you do is kick around on a dirt road they are fine but MAN are they noisy on the slab. I run extra load p-metric radials. During plow season I put chains on the two front tires and never worry about getting stuck.

In previous plowing seasons I've put 500 pounds of sand in the bed for traction. So far this winter I've left it out. I know I've plowed more because I'm almost out of gas when normally I have enough capacity to get to April. And so far no issues without the weight in the bed.

Long story short, I'd get a good set of radials and a set of chains for the plow.

allchevy58 do you know if you can still get Ground Hawg tires? everywhere I check says they are discontinued.

Did some checking too, sounds like they're not making them anymore. Maybe you can e-mail or call Interco and ask them.

Apparently they have the molds but aren't making the tires.... must not be enough demand.
If enough people start requesting them, maybe they'll start.

mrein3, thank you for the reply. I was looking for some input from a plow guy that has had these tires. I already run about 3/4 ton of gravel for weight. The high traction 16" tires are about $200+ online and I can get an off brand AT tire for $120 mounted locally. I guess a better riding and less expensive tire with winter chains would work better than the 20+yr old dry rotted and peeling Sears trail handler tires I'm running now.

I just got in from fishing to catch the end of the game. The snow is getting deep on the lake. I watched a guy in an '06 Chevy get hung up. He got himself out but it took him a while. I just plodded along with my chains.

Yesterday I spent about an hour pushing that stuff around and never got stuck once. Still no weight in the bed, still chained up only on the FRONT tires.

I only have one set of chains, luckily haven't needed them often. I have never chained the rears, just the fronts....
