Born in Florida but live in Vegas now. I collect old Florida plates. And the occasional farm plate.

Re: License plate collecting

There are large license plates collecting groups, my BIL is a member of one, I can try to get more info. I think you can legally buy used plates in most states as long as the registration sticker on them is invalid.

Re: License plate collecting

I had a great experience collecting plates about 4 years ago. I bought a box of them at a garage sale. There was maybe 30 or so from the 30's and 40's. Paid $20 for the box and sold them 2 days later for $500. I love collecting plates!

Re: License plate collecting

I bought my NOS, never been used 1967 VA plates from a plate collector. He is a member of the LPCA (License Plate Collectors of America) hes been doing it for years as a hobby, sells plates at car shows and swap meets. Some of his plates go for $1000 (original 1969 plates with 69 stamped on them for example).

Re: License plate collecting

Ok, i'll start. Since you said you collected Florida plates, I've heard this one is pretty rare. Have this one the front of my truck and the matching yr/color plate on the rear

Re: License plate collecting

We collect them from vehicles we've owned, and I bought some Montana plates (and a mini trailer plate) from a store up there called Top of the World. I have one from Mexico that I found while doing some field work for one of my Geology classes. I also have a few of the plastic dealer plates that come on cars from the dealer.

We put them up around the top of our den like a wallpaper border.

Re: License plate collecting

I was buying them about two years ago - mostly from eBay. They have to be so many years old to be registered on eBay. ( I don't remember HOW old ) I now have at least two from each state and one from each year in my home state, starting from the year of my birth. I have almost all of the one's that were on the previous cars I've owned too. It all came to a "screeching" halt however, when the restoration was started on my truck !!! Here are a few of the "cool" ones:

"IT" happens . . . but I was told, RARELY in Texas !!! - that was the only one I'd seen while I was collecting plates. They supposedly "double check" them before they go out. I have a few more from other states too - but they didn't show up on eBay very often.

Re: License plate collecting

I collect them randomly here and there. Nothing serious and only when they're interesting to me and not too expensive. We have to turn our tags in when we drop insurance or be fined.

What a great collection you have,, I have all states plus DC but of many diffferent years.

If I were to try and get my birthday year I doubt I would ever get em as they didnt make many that year and I believe only what they did was on military vehicles.. now you know I'm an old guy ..LOL
