For those that live near San Francisco...

Hey guys, if this should go elsewhere, would be cool if the moderators would move it. Either way, not so much a truck question, but i will be driving out to san fran in like 2 weeks, and was wondering if anyone could tell me where the awesome roads are out there. I was thinkin of crusin on highway 1 for a while, just to be able to see the ocean and everything. I kno that a lot of ppl have mentioned the nice curvy hilly roads out there, and id like to see em. So if u guys feel like it, mention a road or two, whether it be right near san fran, more towards LA, or north, wherever. Ill have basically an entire day to cruise around, so distance doesnt matter too much.....Thanks everyone...

Sadly ill be driving the focus (at least its new) instead of the 87 or 00.....hopefully she'll hold the corners, haha....

Re: For those that live near San Francisco...

If you decide to go Hwy 1, that is nice scenery all the way to San Francisco. While driving through L.A. stay away from the 405, 5 and 91 during rush hour. In San Francisco if you want to enjoy the City without having to drive or walk, park your car and take the cable car. It was $5 a person last time I went and it takes you from Fishermans Wharf area to Union Square. There is alot of shopping to do there if you take your g/f, wife, significant other. Pier 39 has alot of good eating. There is a place that has Clam Chowder in a bread bowl that is delicious ! There is all sorts of food and Sports stores and if you can reserve ahead of time Alcatraz is right there. That is of course if you decide to park your car. If you want to drive then I guess find Lombard St. (thats the curvy brick road that is so famous) The Golden Gate Bridge, The Bay Bridge, Whatever you decide to do , enjoy !!!

Re: For those that live near San Francisco...

I've always liked hwy 1 through Big Sur, and being that you will be in a small car that will make it better. Since the road gets pretty narrow, and a lot of twists and turns.
Just doing that road will be a solid day of driving and sight seeing.

Re: For those that live near San Francisco...

the sanoma valley just north of town 30 or so miles if memory serves... cool area, esp with a woman on your side (feels gay if you're with a dude) All the other tings mentioned are cool too.
Basicly, just get out and walk, see everything there is. the golden gate is cool.... esp at sun set, take lots of film for your camera... or batterys for your digi-cam anyways.
The alcatraz tour... spend the extra 2 bucks a head for the guided tour, it's a headset that tells you way more than the signs do.
It is an awesome city to visit, there is no doubt about that.

Make the drive to Lake Tahoe if you have the time, great scenery and lots of windey roads, make the trip all the way around. It is a nice drive for sure.

Re: For those that live near San Francisco...

If you head up to Lake Tahoe & you have the time, detour through Antioch and catch SR 160 north. It's a nice, curvy 2 lane road that follows the Sacramento River all the way to Sacramento.
Beautiful farm land (honest, that's the truth), orchards, vineyards, quaint little towns built by the Chinese & other immigrants in the mid to late 1800's.
More than a couple of beautiful, HUGE homes that look like antebellum mansions.

That drive is 1 of my favorites when the weather is nice.
But you have to be very, very careful. One could easily be distracted by bikini clad, young ladies hanging out on the boats in the river.

And, as a side note, if you decide to do this, gimme a holler; I live in Antioch & maybe we could grab a sammich, or something.

Re: For those that live near San Francisco...

But there weren't many bikinis out there in Dec.!
The river is a water ski haven.

Re: For those that live near San Francisco...

If you were interested in the Lake Tahoe thing, it could work out real good for you when you're "eastbound & down" on your way back home.

Re: For those that live near San Francisco...

the redwoods... it's a bit of a cruise, but once you see them, you won't say "just a bunch of tall trees"...

the bridge... from any angle, it's cool. I think mike and I spent like 3 hrs there.

you GOTTA try this place...

the aformentioned river;

pier 39, and the hard rock cafe, lombard ave (that's me driving that rental taurus)... sanoma, free wine if you get lucky...and alkatraz
I have a bunch more photos of the city, but they are lost in multiple files, and possibly even erased from my computer.

Re: For those that live near San Francisco...

You have to go eat at In-N-Out Burger...plain and simple.

If you make it to Lake Tahoe, eat at Izzy's. It has been there forever and is great little dump for hamburgers. The Poderosa is shut down now (bummer), but the Vikingsholm Castle at Emerald Bay is a cool place to tour.

The Sac River is great for bikini clad women, but if ya wants to see nekkid women, head to Lake Havasu City, Az.

It is San Fransisco so you should be able to get away with that.

Actually, you'll be driving "up" the Sacramento River, not that it matters.
The scenery is the same in both directions.

PM on its way.

Do you have a date nailed down yet? If you are around July 11th, come by my place for the meet in my backyard.

If not I will try to hook up with ya too when you come into Antioch.
