Tire Exploded!
Hey guys, had a spare tire in the back of my dads truck. Its been there for weeks. Well, yesterday it just decided to bust through the tread.... Just setting in the back of the truck. It still holds air.... It got hot yesterday, but it has been all week. Anyone have a explination for this. Here are some pictures:

Maybe some tire guys will speak up but I had two Michelin tires do that and I always thought that Water got under the tread and rusted the steel belts

hmm i seen that happen once..... but mine was at 80mph on I10 going back to phoenix..... limped the last 18miles on the belts (stayed pumped up like yours) to the reststop .... bout a 1/4 mile from the reststop BOOOOMMMMM.... was cool the AAA guy gave us a ride the last 100 miles to my house for free (she had AAA).....

Thats called tread seperation. The bond between the casing and the belts failed. The MFG should replace it for you

Tire looks pretty old. How old is it? You can see dry-rot around the separation. Sun will accelerate dry-rotting to the extreme. My vote is the dry-rot compounded by high heat. I seriously doubt that the manufacturer will help you any.

oh, I'm not worried about getting it replaced... It is a old tire I think it was off a 97 1500... Just had never seen anything like that before. It was just sitting in the back of the truck, not on it. We have another wheel and tire from the same truck, think it would be safe to use for a spare?

That tire looks like trash before the tread seperated. I see its dry rotted badly. Tires only have a certain service life. They dont last forever. Its definately failure due to age. The heat raised the air pressure in the tire and The rubber was just too weak to hold it.

the last 2 digits of DOT# on tire are year of manufacture, thanks for the heads up to look at my stuff and get rid of old ones.
a helpful tire clerk once said 5yrs is the safe life of a tire, regardless of how they "Look". I think that is fairly accurate.

Obviously the tire still had winter air in it,by early spring all tires must be drained and have the air replaced with summer air-----

dry rot + heat + very old tire = bound for failure.... stop at a local tire shop and see if they have a used tire of the same size to mount on there as a spare.

yeah i use to instakk that brand tire it is a great tire bf good rich is maded my michlean tires. that tire looks old and ry rot i'd just replace it and let it go
