My 69 $100K Project ... - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Well this is my first post here ... I've been lurking and browsing for some time. I've used this site for countless questions and it has helped out tremendously.

What started out as an idea has turned into a money pit. Well a good money pit.

The idea was to pay a bit extra for a nice rust free truck and repaint it the way I want, add rims and get the interior on point. Then I would have a perfect cruiser.

Well this is my first classic truck project ... And you know the same old story ... You take this apart and figure why not fix it ... take that apart and figure why not add this and upgrade that and then the credit cards are maxed out

Started off with a pretty neat Hugger Orange 69 Fleetside Short that my wife utterly refused to get in so I had to get started on this thing quick ... Texas heat was 110 and NO AC.

Long story short ... We have a Proformance 502 Custom Big Block on order fuel injected with a R4 Transmission ... Full Hotchkis kit just installed ... Willwood 14" Cross Drilled and Slotted brakes ... 22" Brushed Wheels & Tires ... I've ordered about $11K from LMC Truck ... On a waiting list to get the interior done ... BeCool Radiator ... Single Pulley Vintage Air system (not sure I'm saying that right) ... I've change my mind about 20 times on the paint color.

I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things but as of right now the tally on everything we have spent or planning on spending has reached beyond what anyone could imagine

Here's my first question.

I work late and get home on the weekends around 4-5AM ... I live in an quiet community and I like to be courteous to my neighbors as all of our kids and theirs will be going to the same school ... I don't want to come rumbling down the alley and waking everybody up should I decide to take the truck to work ... Does anybody recommend a good muffler or exhaust system that will keep the car quiet below 2500rpm and then opens up after?

We are toying with the idea of running (4) mufflers ... and having an electronic valve re-route the exhaust through the extreme baffled mufflers when pulling into the neighborhood or around large crowds of people like pulling into the VALET of a somewhat civilized restaurant and then having it switch over to the performance muffler when driving out on the highway or getting on it.

Any suggestions?

Well they seemed the easiest way to get everything I needed quick and had a user friendly site ... I have been having post purchase issues with them ... What other sites do you recommend?

Looked like a real nice truck before you started on it.

I built a 800HP SS454 truck for a buddy a few years back. 3.5" Dynomax Welded Ultraflow mufflers. We supprised a lot of people how quiet it was at idle and cruise. Lots of fun beating up on race cars at the track with a little ol 4200lb street truck.

It was a monster when the Vortec started making boost.

A couple of shots of us putting the truck back together after tearing it down to line everything up ... Installed Hotchkis kit ... Getting stereo fitted ... Once it's all together going to tear it down again, reinforce box the frame, send it to powdercoat, etc ...

Sounds FUN! I don't know how you kept the power on the ground ... Alot of people thought I was crazy tearing this truck apart because it did look really good.

There is a system that is out there for what you're referring to I'm going to do the same thing on my 73 BMW project. Flip switch turns the baffle sideways to let it breathe.

He used caltrcs and did not try to break records in the 60ft dept. Best ET was in the 6.30's but it was consistant mid 6's . Flat tappet, ported 049's and and about 11lbs of blow through boost with a YS blower. The combo was stupid simple.

I did a bunch of internet searches for high-flow mufflers that were as quiet as possible. One of the top repeat recommendations were Dynomax Ultra Flows.

They flowed almost the same as no muffler @ all (2.5" offset in/out) in comparison tests yet were the quietest (idle ~ 2k rpm) vs. the other mufflers tested (Summit p/n wlk-17749). Now for a stout BBC, you'll likely step up to 3" exhaust so try the 17769's (3" offset in/ centered out; big freakin' mufflers so you'd need some space for them). The 3" exhaust will inherently be louder vs. the 2.5's but not so much that idling down the alley would be 'piss the neighbors off' loud.

Now when the pedal is mashed, these things were as loud as any of the others in those same tests....

I would you use kennys trucks they have anything you can get from lmc and more plus they are great people and when you order from them you deal with the owners not just some Jo blow

Doh.... I got my info crossed up.

The numbers & info in the post are for Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers. I called them 'ultra flow's' cause I was thinking of some other mufflers I've used (Hooker Max Flows).

That looks like some high end mufflers. Any idea on what the selling price for a pair?

NEXT QUESTION ...

Need to relocate the gas tank to the rear ... The one that got here from LMC doesn't work ... I'm now running fuel injection ... I'm leaning towards RicksTanks ...

Need some ideas, photos and/or sources to get something done ... Needs an IN / OUT / Filler Neck / Breathing Outlet / Sending Unit.
