Hey guys just recently gotting my lisence and been driving to school and around and I have to leave pretty early for school,and this time of year, up north it gets a little cold so I was wondering to anyone who lives in a colder climate how long do you give your truck to warmup? I gave mine about 5 min and everytime i would stop a light or traffic it would die on me and it really gets on my nerves.

my truck sits for 10 hours while working at night and i let it warm up for 10 minutes at 3am and it hasnt stalled on me. i also just put in in new plugs and air filter and oil change too so im sure a fresh tune up wouldnt hurt.

Make sure the choke is working right. Very important for cold weather running. What type of carburetor are you running?

I think the choke may be part of the problem, Iam running a 4bbl rochester quadrajet carb.

I rarely let mine warm up over a minute. But then again mine's fuel injected...

I let mine run on fast idle for about 20 seconds or so in warmer weather, and 2 to 3 minutes in colder weather. Of course, "cold" to me is around 30 degrees F.

I never could get my quadrajet in my old Monte Carlo to act decent on cold mornings. It usually took a few miles for it to get normal.

Depends on the temperature. I let mine run for about 5-10 minutes sometimes when it's really cold out, simply because I want the heater to be going good by then.

As long as I use the choke, I don't need more than 15-20 secs to warm up.

if you truck has an automatic choke on it as it warms up the cold idle SHOULD kick itself down once it reaches a certain point...

I have noticed that my truck doesnt idle down. It pretty much stays the same the whole time. When i had my other engine in it would idle high then when i gave a poke on the gas it would idle down. Doesnt stall on me though when i take off though and it doesnt even seem to be idling to high. Do i need to adjust the idle on it or should i just leave it alone.

If it's normal idle is fine then don't mess with that. There's another (seperate) set-screw somewhere for the fast idle. Maybe some rochester gurus can point you in the right direction. I have an edelbrock, my quadrabog took a crap and is long gone.

I usually let mine warm up for about 5mins no major problems. Sounds like your choke is not working that well to me. I have eldebrock carbs on everything I own and no major problems.

The confusing part is that it stays at the same idle the whole day as im driving and it doesnt sound like the the engine is idling too fast at all. I would atleast think it would eventually kickdown though. I just dont want to be dumping more gas than i have to at stops if the idle is too high.

If it never kicks down, then its likely the fast idle isn't functuioning. The fast idle cam is linked to the choke plate and will only function when the choke is closed (When the engine is "overnight" cold). Hold the throttle all the way open with your hand (engine off) and at the bottom of the part the throttle cable attatches to, there will be a screw facing you. That's the fast idle set screw and you cant get to it unless the throttle is all the way open. Do you give it any gas before you start it? to turn on the fast idle, you have to give it about a half pump with the pedal before you start it, then when it starts it will fast idle, then you tap the pedal again when you're ready to kick down to normal idle. Your choke may be out of adjustment, since they are directly linked.

Edelbrock electric chokes are notorious for opening too fast. Adjust the choke to stay closed longer. I adjust mine for winter and summer times.

mine warms up until i get good oil pressure then it's tire spinnin time
nothin like pissin off the neighbors at 5 am...(earlier then that i jsut done have the heart)

Yo! About a minute or two is proper. Set your choke at fully open, but about to close, when the engine is hot, and be sure the choke is nearly closed when cold. Tune the engine properly, and lube the choke mechanism. Todd.

Nice. I dont give it gas. I turn the key and the motor fires right up. I will give it a pump haf a pump first like you said...thanks man.

thanks for the adivice guys. When I start it up I usually give it 1 pump and it starts but this morning i gave it about 10 min to warm up and it runs fine while cruising but when I stop or slow down the idle slows and it eventually shuts off, what would cause this?

Edelbrock carbs are aluminum. In cold weather it just takes time to warm up. Icying is a problem too.

Thanks. I did exactly what you instructed with the pedal and the carb did exactly what you said it would. Let it idle for a few minutes hit the gas again and it kicked down. I guess there are more to carburetors than i thought, seems like each one has its own lil deals..Thanks man.
