C20/Big Block Problem

Need some help on what to do next. Left my ride sitting while I went away for a couple of weeks. When I returned battery was low so I recharged it and it checks out. I can start the engine and it idles, but when I try to accelerate it loads up and dies. Things I have done. Pulled carburetor, Carter ASB, checked it out it is clean, and pump is in good shape. Checked fuel pump and it is working to specs, next replaced points, rotor and dizzy cap, still no change. Pulled plugs (less than 500 miles on them) R44xls, checked gaps, replaced plug wires. Checked dwell and it is between 26 and 30 degrees, timing is at 8 before. Damn thing still loads up and dies. Anybody got any ideas?

Is the accelerator pump working?

If you mean the one in the carburetor, yes. I replaced it a couple of months ago from a kit from BFIC Carbs.

vac advance on the distributor workin?

At this point I suspect it is not, but how is that test done? I tested both the manifold vac and the distributor vac at the carb with a Sun vac tester. Can you point me to a place on this site that might show me?

pull the hose off the intake/carb, make sure it is plugged into the dist, and suck on the open end. If it feels like an open straw from Mc D's, then you need a vac can. If it feels like a straw with a finger over the end... then it's OK.
If it tests OK, i would then pop the cap off, and grab the rotor, and gently twist it back and forth. If it moves freely and springs back, put it back together and call it good. If not, then you need to clean/lube a bunch of parts... or replace it with a new HEI. They can be had quite cheap and are a million times better than the old set up.

I am slow at the typing thing^^^ What he said, but they make a tool (cheapy vac pumps from Autozone are like $10-15) and this will test all of what LHM said at once, but his way is a now way to do it.








Pull the cap and a pull a vacuum on the advance canister, it should move the plate inside dist, and hold it as long as the vacuum is held. If it doesn't move or moves and then goes back the diaphram may be shot. I like to run more than 8 degrees advanced, but I really don't own a bone stock 350, did you try to advance the initial??

Was there a breather on it when it was sitting? I had this problem once after sitting for only 1 weekend. Turned out the dirt dobbers plugged the vent tube solid! Those crazy things will plug everything this time of year.
