battery question size

This might be a silly question but I need a new battery for my 72 Chevy 350. The one that came in the truck was very small and shot. I was wondering what cold cranking amps is needed or anything else I would need and if the ones from Wal-Mart are alright or some other place would be better.
What are the thoughts on this?

Re: battery question size

I've used the walmart ones in a few vehicles. Their not the best but when it craps out take it back for a new one. They have like a 3 year free replacement and are a lot cheaper than an Optima which is my favorite battery.I buy the most cca I can. I'd rather have too much battery than not enough.

Re: battery question size

The more CCA you can afford, the better. It's the same as horsepower. If you have a big block and drive it normal, it won't be working very hard and (in theory) should last a long time. A 6 cyl will work harder to do the same work and may wear out more quickly. Same is true with batteries.

In terms of where to buy them, go to Costco! Consumer Reports rated their batteries as being better than an Interstate battery! They have a decent warrantee and no hassles on returns. I've bought them for my vehicle for a few years now and haven't had one fail yet.

Re: battery question size

I also like lots of cca's.The more elect options a vehicle has the more cca's are needed.I was once told a battery should be a minimum of the same #of cca's as the CI of engine displacement for a vehicle with no power options.I think of that as buying a half ton truck then piling 1500 # of crap on it and going hot rodding. It ain't gonna last long.
