Tail gate info
I talked to a guy a about a tailgate at the show last Saturday it’s off of a 1986 square . It was a very early takeoff from when he bought the truck new (local farmer ) and has been up on a shelf in his barn the truck is long gone . I’m going to go look at it next week . I know nothing about the value of square body parts . What do you think I should offer I don’t want to overvalue it . Not looking to sell it since the gate on my 85 is a repo I’d like to put it on that .

Re: Tail gate info
I think for stuff like that it's a matter of how much it's worth to you. Ask how much he wants to get for it to start off. You may be pleasantly surprised. You could start at $175 if he insists you make and offer first, and I don't think that should be offensive. If it's in super good condition it seems as high as $500 would be OK. If the color already matches your truck don't stop at that price just go for it. I suggest don't point out defects such as dings or rust spots during negotiations, just have a look at it and decide.

Re: Tail gate info
A minimum top price would be whatever the price is on a new purchase of that reproduction piece currently on your truck. If you get it for less then that, you did good. Bonus points if he still has the mounting hardware. Up to you if you want to go over the repro price.
If you get lucky, he wants the shelf space back more then getting max value for the tailgate. |

Re: Tail gate info
Some good points but a mint original should be worth more than a repop any day . I have a set of NOS wheel opening mouldings for my 66 SS Chevelle they are worth 10 times that of a repo set
