Whats the most horse power (biggest engine) you can put into an 85 silverado C10 without doing any welding or major mount/frame work? Is the 454 bored out with all the new heades and rockers and all that stuff the best you can do? What problems would I encounter?

This is entirely dependent on how deep your pockets are. Horsepower costs money.....

i think the GM 572 is a bolt in. Cant swear to it, cant afford one, but Id be willing to bet it is. Horsepower is only limited to your pocket book as stated.

I think at anything above 500 you will need to address many small issues like upgrading everything to high strength bolts and removing rivets and either welding or bolting on parts- above 750 hundred I would start to brace everything - beyond that I would be going custom frame for safety

The frame wont be as much of a problem as traction... After like 450 to the wheels or so I would think your gonna be spinning everwhere. But my guess before you should box the frame and that kind of thing would be like 700 - 800 but thats a lot... like damn

You guys are over thinking. Put a stock LS motor with a turbo on it, good suspension and you'll be good to handle 650-700hp all day long.

speaking as someone whos delt with many, some up to 600 horse if you drive with all your brain cells the only things you'll blow up were worn out already

these trucks had very strong parts out of the factory the only reason that there are so many that are reduced to scrap is age, abuse, and owners that save money by hillbillying stuff to work. if you had a brand new 1985 c10 that just rolled out of the factory last week and a brand new 2011 silverado and drove them the same the 85 would outlive the 2011.

Just remember when building up a truck that: Quality = FAIR Price

I had a 87 LWB silverado. pulled the 350tbi and stuck a 454 bored out to a 496. professionaly built... costed an arm and a leg, at the time it was the best of the best. built TH400 by a renown shop, and a built ford 9"... should have bought a stall, i used a stock th350. I bought some cheap 25$ nascar slicks from ebay for burnouts, well i used them at the track and they were crap. I knew they would be since they compound was stupid hard. The announcer gave me an applaud for the smoke show. I only took it to the track once, stacked 8 bags of concrete in the bed near the tailgate (seriously 8) and ran a 13.0 at 114mph. had i not had that extra couple hundred lbs, it would have been 11's... but thats numbers. I had no suspension work done at all, no boxing of the frame, but I didnt do anything stuid like autox or constant drag racing.... awesome truck though

Install a 500 Caddy!! More power and torque than a 454. Less weight and better gas milage!!

Thanks! Got alot of good ideas now. I would like to keep the body and frame as stock as I can, right now I'm getting my 700r4 working then a new paint job and window rubber (its really falling out) and then the motor. Probably end of next year, but I want to start looking now and seeing what I'm dealing with.
If the engine has not been rebuilt (as far as I know and its an 85) then what should I replace/fix/upgrade before putting a turbo on it? (and are you recomending that with a 454 or my original 305?)

A stock 700R4 will only handle 300hp max.

What needs to be done to the transmission or what transmission do you need then? I'm really new to trucks (or mechanics in general) I thought the 700r4 was one of the bigger better transmissions...? wasn't that whats in the old camaros? and for the record is there a difference between the 700r and the 700r4? or just lazy typers?

TH700R4, TH700, 700R, 700R4, all the same, 700R4 is the main name for it. It was is multiple cars, it is a 3-speed automatic with overdrive, which makes it a 4-speed automatic. A race trans builder can build you one, or you can order a built one online.
