Is this a good deal?

A 2003 5.3l pullout with 4l65E trans, wiring harness and computer for 700.00
It's missing a couple of coil packs and the transmission is for a 4 wheel drive.
The man bought it to put in a street rod but never did. It has set in his garage for 4 years and he has never heard it run. Supposly only has 35000 miles. Is this a good price? I would like to put it in a 68 c10 2wheel drive. What do you think?

Re: Is this a good deal?

Sounds like a very fair deal. I'm not sure about the tranny and the four wheel drive issue. It would be a good amount of work to put into our trucks unless you're already an accomplished mechanic.

The transmission will be a 4L60E. The transmission will need to be torn down to install a 2wd output shaft, you will also need a VSS reluctor ring, 2wd extension housing, 2wd VSS sensor. Sounds like a good price

Not really needed behind a 5.3 in a 1/2 ton truck. 4L60Es are not as bad as everyone thinks.

4l60 will handle 400hp if not abused. Great tranny for bolton/cam power(they don't like blowers much)

If I could find a 4l80 for a couple hundred more that will be $$$ well spent as I tend to forget to drive easy and stop at 400hp....lol

Re: Is this a good deal?

Since it's been sitting for so long is that hard on the engine? What would it cost to convert the trans to a 2 wheel drive? Anything else to look for when I
go look at it?

The engine will be fine (teflon seals, neoprene gaskets) If the injector rail wasnt drained/engine wasnt ran out of fuel you might have some gummed up injectors, take them out & soak them in sea-foam. Leave the injectors & coils unhooked when first cranking the engine too build oil pressure.

If you supply the parts a good trans man whould charge you 100 bucks.

Re: Is this a good deal?

I would sell that tranny and find a 2wd 4L60E. The 2wd tailshaft extensions are spendy.

Sounds like a good deal to me.

FYI, find some used stock coil packs for cheap. The MSD ones are $$$ and offer no gains over the stockers.

Re: Is this a good deal?

See if you can pull the vin out of the computer prior to buying and run it through Carfax. I bought a 2003 5.3 w/ 4l60E 60,000 miles for $750. Carfax told me it was a 2000, 4.8 225,000 miles and from a stolen truck. Because your right at core price I would take a chance.

Re: Is this a good deal?

Can you tell a 5.3 from a 4.8 just by looking at it? Is the vin printed on the engine or the computer that I can write it down? Probably will go look at it this weekend and i want to be prepared. Thanks for all the help you guys have given me
