A/C Evaporator core removal

The weather has cooled off some and I have some free time on my hands so why not tackle this? I have a new evaporator core sitting and waiting. Any tips on what I am getting into? Things to do or not to do? Any hidden bolts? Anything I will need?\

While you have it out, I'd put a new heater core in while you're there.

Re: A/C Evaporator core removal

Chris, I would jack up the right front, put a jack stand under it; and pull the right front tire. Remove all items attatched to the right inner fender on top, and remove the inner fender from the bottom. Your A/C box is right there, with access to all of it. Just take your time, take pictures of how its in there. Get some of that butyl seal stuff, to seal the box when your done. Change the heater core if it's old, BUT it's on the other side of the fire wall. So, that would be more stuff to do.... Good Luck, shouldn't be too bad.

Re: A/C Evaporator core removal

If you just want to change out the evaporator core,it's fairly easy!
Just remove the side cover from the a/c box (on the side closest to the engine).
Take the old core out and put the new core in.Replace the o-rings and reconnect the lines.
Vacuum and recharge it.
Mike.

Re: A/C Evaporator core removal

You may want to suck out the leaves etc from the heater box and obviously the AC box while you're in there.

Re: A/C Evaporator core removal

Thank you for the advice on everything. I agree that doing the heater core probably wouldn't be a bad idea, but right now money is tight. I bought the evap core with some advance auto parts speed perks a while back....so it is sitting and waiting.
If we ever stop getting hit by storms I would get to it! I will post up when I am done.

Re: A/C Evaporator core removal

The weather was perfect to get at it today. Not too hot to work in but just warm enough to test out the air. Once I got all the screws and nuts off it popped right apart and out came the old evaporator. It appeared that at some point someone had welded on the bottom of the evaporator....and had done a pretty crappy job at it. The new one slid into place and buttoned up nicely. After all was said and done she is blowing nice and cool. Thanks for all the advice.

Re: A/C Evaporator core removal

Ive got to replace an evaporator myself. Mine is actually an AC/heater evap combo under the dash. Were there any issues with removing the AC lines? Ive read doing this incorrectly can damage other AC components, but it looks you just unscrewed bolts, removed and replaced?

Hoping its that dirt simple. Lately Ive had a knack for making small jobs get bigger and costlier haha.

Re: A/C Evaporator core removal

Just make sure the system is void of pressure before loosening the lines

Re: A/C Evaporator core removal

You can "rent" the AC vacuum pump, oil injector, and manifold gauges from O'Riley and probably Advance and the Zone.
As long as you bring em back in 48 hours, IIRC, you don't pay a cent for them.
This isn't doing the dishonest use them and return them as new... This is how the loaner tools are supposed to work.

Re: A/C Evaporator core removal

I had the pressure release attachment from a can I used in the past. Use that to release pressure and got it out. Thx.

Plugged water and intake to bypass until I decide what to do.
You guys would not believe the evap I pulled out of the case. It was a AC/heater combo that appears to have come from an 18 wheeler. Not kidding.

Ah, the joys of discovering all the Disneyland stuff when you get under the skin of a custom truck! The fun never ends!

Re: A/C Evaporator core removal

Seriously - you guys ever seen something like THIS get pulled out of a C-10 evaporator case? The closest thing I could find was this:

https://mpparts.com/part/072248001-h...xoCVZsQAvD_BwE

...and the Rep said it's made for a Concrete Mixing Truck, Hahaha.

Anyway, sorry for hijacking thread - but just wanted to share.
