Stupid Question. What are the temperature gauge readings in degrees? i.e. What is the temperature when the needle is pointing to C (cold) and H (hot)?

My weekly posting of this chart... the gauge pegs at either end of this curve. I think the highest Hot mark is 230-ish.

I think they are all different. I bought me a cheap laser thermometer and none of my trucks were exactly the same.

These guages were never ment to measure temperatures with any accuracy. They are only a reference to show the driver that things are normal or going bad. They are resistance based so any change in voltage or conductivity in the circuit shows up on the gauge. They were designed first and formost to make GM money. Otherwise they would have been mechanical guages.

Mine was running very close the 'H' in traffic once so I pulled over and shot the lazer at the thermostat housing and head. 230. I put water in the rad and quit worrying about it. Checked it later when it close to the middle of the gauge and it was around 185 so at least I know middle and top end temps. O'Reilly $13 sending unit on stock gauge.

Over the years as GM (and all the others) used suppliers there would be differences in the guage sets. Maybe between model years or between the models themselves. Now the aftermarket tries to use as few senders as possible to cover all the differences. See this PDF document for a lot of information on the subject. It is a copy of some information from a Corvette forum.
