Redneck got a score! SWB Fleet Bed!

I did it again. I can't stop. Why can't I leave my truck alone?

Ever since I bought the old girl in 1996 I've wanted a fleet bed for it. I came close to buying a PERFECT Arizona bed for $1,500 in 1998. Well, it wasn't just for the bed. Two rusty ass New York 69-72 trucks came with it. I didn't care about the trucks, just the bed, but alas, I didn't have the $$$. Remember those trucks dad? I think they were in Falconer, or was it Jamestown?

Any who. I saw one offered up on the parts board and jumped on it. I drove 170 miles up to Winston-Salem, NC to pick it up.

It's not quite as nice as it looks in the pics, but it is EXTREMELY straight. There are 3 areas with small pinholes and the bed floor is basically toast. It's bent all to hell. The front panel will most likely be replaced and the repop tailgate looks to be repairable. I got a very fair deal on it.

This was offered up by Geoff, board member gcburdic. He was super nice and sent me close up pics of all the "bad" areas of the bed. There were NO surprises when I saw it, I was actually happy. With the bed stripped it looked a little wavy in the pics, but in person it's as straight as can be.

The bed was at the body shop where his truck was being painted. The body shop wanted way too much $$$ to repair it and for Geoff a new repro bed was his best/cheapest option. His truck is GORGEOUS!! The paint was finished just a few days ago. It's a sunset orange metallic 68 swb fleet truck. I can't wait for more pics of it! Y'all will love it! I was stupid and forgot to take pics of it.

Geoff was a great fella to meet and we talked trucks waaaaay longer than we should have and I ended up unloading the bed after dark

Thanks for the deal bud!

I know pics are a requirement, so here goes:

Re: Redneck got a score! SWB Fleet Bed!

Ok, so what do you do with a naked bed? You go to Wal-Mart and buy some 98 cent cans of flat black paint (not primer) and have a spray paint party!

Geoff was insistent that I see the bed "naked" and that he'd help me get something on it after I got there. I liked the idea! After a trip to Wally World it was flat black 20 minutes later. There are RUNS GALORE

Re: Redneck got a score! SWB Fleet Bed!

I also got a tailgate and a roll pan. I doubt I'll use it, I like bumpers. My 67 was rear ended a year ago and if I hadn't had a bumper my bed, and maybe back of the cab, would have been totaled. BUT, only the bumper was messed up

Re: Redneck got a score! SWB Fleet Bed!

And, of course, my other baby, the tow vehicle.

It towed the bed/trailer with ease. I went 75 the whole way home, except for my 45 minute slow down through Charlotte. Stupid traffic. I averaged 16.4 mpg over the whole trip. I drove about 375 miles total, I have no place to store the bed, so a friend of mine up near Landrum is storing it for me until I purchase a home sometime this year!

I'd also like to add that those ratchet tie downs are AWESOME! The bed didn't move a single centimeter the whole way back!

Yup. Back to Dixie Auto to see if they have another 88-98 Silverado that was wrecked in the rear on the driver's side. They wouldn't let me cut up a "good" bedside last time!

I also need to shave the turn signals!

Whoops! I completely forgot Geoff emailed me pics of his truck. Hope he doesn't mind me posting a couple. She looks just as nice in person too! The wheels are temporary. He's looking into a set of rallys for it.

Re: Redneck got a score! SWB Fleet Bed!

I agree, I drove 300 miles round trip to get a tool box, and they do, but i have to find a bed first to make a road trip to go get it

Are you going to take it off the trailer or ride it around a month or two?
It sure gives your newer truck alot more class hauling that old junk around.
I would hate to buy a bed all stripped to bare metal. Now you have no idea what condition the paint was in.J/K of course,it`s the other way around.I like original paint or bare for sure.

I won't be selling anything for quite some time. Reids auto parts? Where are they located? Do that have "our trucks" there?

It's going to stay right where it is for the next 1 1/2 to 2 years. I plan on taking my time with the new bed and continue to enjoy driving the '67 as-is for now.

The silverado isn't a newbie anymore. She'll be turning 9 in November. Unfortunately the bed is already sitting under tarps 30 miles away

Re: Redneck got a score! SWB Fleet Bed!

If you cant find a gas door up there, you could make the trip to Prosperity S.C. and get one from Ackermans, Its about 1.5 hours away from greenville. They had several newer models that were smacked in the bed. Nice score too by the way.

Jesse,

It was great to meet you and glad got it home okay!!!....Love the picture of the bed in the mirror ...I think you are more excited than a kid in a candy store!!!....Let me know if I can help you out once you get to cutting and welding on it....Maybe you can teach me how to weld!!!....
Hope the fiance wasn't too mad about you being late....but what the hay man....we were talking trucks!!!

Thanks for the tip. I hope to get another one fairly easy. I think the 98-04 S-10's and S-10 blazers used the same door as well, so I have some options. I really like these doors because the door is flush and there is only a small notch recessed to open it.

Thanks for the props, but I'm just good at pretending to talk like I know what I'm taking about.
