Msd ignition question?

How much of a noticible difference have you seen going from the stock HEI to a full on MSD Igintion? Can you run your HEI with an MSD Ignition and is there a noticible difference in that configuration? Im thinking about going full on MSD on the 67 ShortWide I am getting ready to restore and wondering if its worth the money?

Re: Msd ignition question?

On a well tuned stock engine you will "feel" little to no difference, on a high performance engine is a major change. Start retard, rev limiter, longer and stronger spark through out the stroke is almost a must in a high performance engine. But either way most quailty ingition boxes are less than $300.00, I feel its a good investment no matter what your putting it on. Some of the newer programable ones are pricey but for the person who plans on upgrading their engine in the future they are still good investments.

You can run an HEI with an MDS "box" if that's what you are asking.

I can also tell you this: If you get shocked by a pro billet MSD dizzy and a 6AL, it will make your brain tingle a little bit. No kidding!

I think that's why you trust MDS. I have NEVER had a problem with a single part from them and they really are not that complicated. I love the soft touch rev control. I'm not good at looking down at my tach when I'm going sideways.

X-2 Just pull the coil wire off and turn the key on, that will tell you enough!

Re: Msd ignition question?

I went from a HEI to a full MSD setup, only difference I saw was that I didnt foul the plugs nearly as often...

Re: Msd ignition question?

I had a 65 Malibu with a 350 running a cam that had a good deal of overlap. I ran a stock HEI. I gutted the module from the HEI and just used it as a mag trigger for an MSD 6A box. The idle quality improved noticeably and I got about another 2" of vacuum. This vac increase was enough to let me get by with the power brakes.

Everything as far as timing, mixture, etc was pretty optimized when running the HEI alone so it was a fair evaluation before and after.

I do agree that on a basic, non-HP engine, there's probably not going to be much of a noticeable difference.

AusTruck,
I have an HEI in the truck and it seems to run really good. I haven't had it out on the road to see how it acts at higher RPMs but this 350 should be running in the low 300HP to Maybe 325 by how its built. I dont call that a real high HP engine so I think I will stay with the HEI but on this next truck 67 ShortWide Small Window with a 67 327 im wanting to bump that motor to about 360HP to maybe pushing 400 Ponies. I think I might just try out an MSD on that one. When your talking about a full frame off Resto whats another $300 to $400 in the resto.

Re: Msd ignition question?

a stock hei setup will start crapping out at about 4500 rpms going with the msd it is no longer a problem also smoother idle and easier starting. With a stock low hp motor you will not even really notice a difference.

Re: Msd ignition question?

When I had HEI I had to keep a spare module in the truck at all times because I would burn them out every couple of months. I went with MSD box only and started having problems with the coils in the distributer. So I finally got the distributer and didn't notice a big power increase but it definitely idled better. But the best part is I have not had any more issues with my ignition.
