Possibly timing too far advanced?

Re: i need help with my 1971 chevy cheyenne

It could be that one of the rubber hoses in the fuel line has holes in it or is collapsing.

Also the filter/sock in the tank could be plugged.

The float in the carb could be sticking.

As you see it could be a number of things.

Hope this helps.

Re: i need help with my 1971 chevy cheyenne

Why would timing to far advanced run out of gas???

If you did the filter and pump, then maybe trash in the carb? If it's starts and runs good, like you stated, then timing is good. To far advanced and the starter will kick back, to retard and starter will drag.

Shyguy is right! He got more into it than I did. I would clean the carb first though and then look into the lines. SOME carbs have a filter in them, few don't. If there's gas in the filter then don't bother with the lines and go for the carb first.

the problem will be in the carb, not fuel delivery.
if there was a restriction or blockage, it'd act stupid when rollin down the freeway, not sittin in the driveway.
What kind of carb is on it? Edelbrock?

I had the same problem on a 71 cutlass i used to have. It turned out that there was a line of custy crumbling hose that was sucking air. I changed it out with new hose and the problem was solved.

Re: i need help with my 1971 chevy cheyenne

All of this reminds me of a chronic problem I had with a motorhome back in the 80's that had dual exhausts.

It was doing the same thing as you describe. I tried everything with the fuel system and even checked out the ignition system.

It about drove me crazy, the engine would just die and in 10 minutes or so it would fire right back up and run ok for a long time.

We were on our way back to California in the town of Mohave when it did it. I crawled under it and found that it was real hot near the fuel line where a filter was. I finally figured that the pressure drop across the filter and the heat was causing a vapor lock. I wrapped a wet towel around the fuel filter and drove home without another vapor lock.

I replaced the fuel line with a 3/8" metal line and routed it away from the exhaust. I never had a problem again.

The same problem on my buddy's 57.The rubber fuel line from the tank to the metal line was sucking air.

Re: i need help with my 1971 chevy cheyenne

I traded a buddy a car for a little '91 350 S-10 a couple years ago. I couldn't make it home. It ran for a couple miles and died, and a few minutes I was gone again then it did it again. I noticed (2) 3/8 lines underneath the steering column, turns out that the one that was cutoff and he plugged it up. Thing is that what he plugged up was the gas tank breather line LOL. What it was doing was stucking the air from the tank and couldn't feed the carb. I don't see that as your problem but just a story. Never seen a old truck of these years being that air tight.
