power steering seal replacement
hi, i have a 72 c10 and the seal around where the pitman arm is leaking badly.i tried all the differant fluids to help. but didnt. so. how hard is it to replace the seal.i have the pitman arm puller.anyone have any helpful hints on replaceing one? thanks

I would almost say get another used or rebuilt box. I have not had much luck with replacing those seals.

Advance charges $140 for a new box, so I'd say just replace the whole thing.

If you have the time and are fairly comfortable with mechanicking, it's not hard to replace the seals. I rebuilt my gear box about 1-1/2 years ago for the same reason and was surprised how easy it was to do. However you have to read and/or view videos and follow the procedures. Several videos on youtube and procedure on the net if you do a search.
Otherwise, as mentioned above, get a rebuilt one.

No reason to replace the box for that leak.
Remove pitman arm. Remove snap ring. Place drain pan under steering box. Start engine and turn steering wheel lock to lock. It will blow the old seals out and they will land in the drain pan. Install new seals and snap ring. Reinstall pitman arm. It's a 20 minute job am will cost you about 15 bucks including the fluid. Worst case the seals won't blow out and you have to reach up in there and pull them with a pointy tool. That might add another 10 minutes to the job. Posted via Mobile Device |
