I'm going camping! 1966 GMC
Well I'm pretty sure I made a killer deal on this one! Clean 1966 GMC motorhome. My wife and I have been talking and we want to start camping. We are not sleep on the ground tent style people so we decided a motorhome would be perfect! This thing is in great shape! The interior side of the motorhome will need to be adressed. But thats no big thing. It has a 305 v6 4 speed. Needs a water pump but he says it runs strong. If everything is in order will this 305 be a keeper or should I plan to replace it when the time comes? Let me know what you guys think!
Tony from Norcal p.s I'm stealing it for $700 bucks! Last edited by 64shortc10; 04-01-2011 at 06:42 PM. |

Dual fuel tanks. Looks like a really clean unit. Awesome price.

Re: I'm going camping! 1966 GMC
THe V-6 is super reliable and has plenty of torque to haul around the camper. You will have to get the water pump from rockauto.com or NAPA. I think they're about $50. Nobody else has them, it seems.

Re: I'm going camping! 1966 GMC
I used to have a 60 GMC with a 305 V-6. I kept it original and drove it for a while with that engine but it got about 6 miles to the gallon and did not have very much power. I eventually replaced it with a 350. Nice motorhome. Swap in a 5.3/4L60E and it will be a keeper for sure.

Re: I'm going camping! 1966 GMC
If this truck has super low mileage, which it looks like it does, it will be a long time till you need to replace this engine. These engines were designed by GMC engineers to last 200-300K miles in truck service when they came out new in 1960, a time when period engines only lasted around 100K in truck service. The biggest problem with 1 tons is that they are geared very low, may require a gear vendors overdrive for far away camping trips.

Re: I'm going camping! 1966 GMC
It looks super clean from the little pics. Is that a knee freezer under the dash! That thing would be right at home at Oroville or Collins. Where are you planning on taking it?

Re: I'm going camping! 1966 GMC
$700 bucks?!!!!!!
Nice score, dude! Get the 305 running, but I think you'll find that you might be better off with a more powerful engine down the road. That's a lot of weight to pull around. $700 bucks.......OMG that is a smokin' deal!!!

Re: I'm going camping! 1966 GMC
I disagree that you'll need more "power" down the road, but you might need more speed.
That V6 is a torquie engine. If you put a hay fork with some thread on it on the back you could drag it down the Grand Canyon and sew the whole canyon back together. That camper won't bother it a bit. The only issue is the speed because they're geared so low. Still, you can drive it until 2050 at <60 mph, or you can rip the v6 out and put in a 350 then drive that until 2020 at 80mph. Just depends on what you want. Either way, that's a very good find. Re: I'm going camping! 1966 GMC
I say a trans swap is in order, or at least a gear-venders OD unit. Switch to electronic ignition, upgrade the alternator, and you'll be able to drive it just about anywhere. Great score, enjoy.

Great find! We're always looking for something like this. Instead we just bought a 1965 Boles Aero camper to pull to weekend shows.

Re: I'm going camping! 1966 GMC
You need to read John Steinbeck's "Travels With Charley". Then buy a dog. Then hit the road with your V6 GMC.
