I need help on choosing a stall converter?!.

I need help on choosing a stall for my truck. I am not sure that i fully understand exactly how they work.

i am building a 350 (.30 over), dished pistons, with vortec heads, air gap intake, long tubes, and comp 268 cam. I have a 12 bolt rear sitting under my parts truck and a 10 bolt on my truck now. Right now I am running 31" bfg all terrains but will be going to street tires once these wear down if I dont sell them first.

Anyhow my question is, is a 2800 stall a good choice or what would you guys recommend? I have a guy that wants to trade me the 2800 for something.

agreed, the convertor companies will work hard to help you select a convertor for your specific combination. It's kind of not fair to use their expertise and work then go to a shelf stock convertor from Jeggs or Slummit. But. we all have to work to estimate / bid projects that we may or may not get.

All that aside,, I would suggest you stay away from the used convertor unless you know FOR A FACT that the trans it was in is a perfectly working trans. If the trans went away it filled the convertor with trach,, that you do NOT want in your trans.

OK, a from the hip,, a 268H cam is a pretty mild cam. Sounds like your going to have fairly low compression, a 2800 convertor ought to give you 1800-2000 foor brake stall on the street. It will be a help to get the heavy truck moving,, assuming traction holds. So yes,, a 2500-2800 convertor appears to be a reasonable choice. Be SURE and add a external trans oil cooler also, The stock in-radiator cooler is simply NOT enough for the street and much stall at all. Besides, a trans oil cooler is cheap, and great insurance for any trans.

I have about the same motor but little bigger cam and motor 350 (.060) 361 and I have a 25-2800 and with my 3.73 and 700r4 trans it works really well on the street. From a dead stop and stand on it the rpm's will jump to 2500 and break the tires loose...On the foot brake I can get a little over 2500 before it wants to push through the brakes.

check out www.converter.com it FULLY EXPLAINS HOW THEY WORK AND HOW TO DETERMINE THE STALL OF YOUR CURRENT CONVERTER in the FAQ section.
